California punted.

Propostition 8 stands, but the marriages also stand.
This was the only position the judges could really take.

1) It avoids the "Activist Judges Overturning the Will of the People" shouts from right-wing hatespeech radio.

2) It doesn't create an ex post facto situation.

3) It avoids large-scale violence. The gay community is about 3-5% of the US population. And their enemies also tend to be better armed. There is a large, vocal minority in this country who would dearly love to see gays eradicated and are willing to help. I expect to see a rise in hate-crimes.

The gay community is--rightly--unhappy. But, we'll take it back to the ballot box and this time, we'll win.

The Christian Right is also unhappy. They didn't get what they see as sodomite "marriages" wiped out. They haven't been able to force shame on the community. They know they are losing.

Of course, nothing says the gay community can't introduce referendums to put other minority groups' civil rights to a majority vote. (I'm looking at the Mormons) You know, just to make a point...

There's a scene in NICK & CORBAN, where Nick taked the librarian, Corban, for a ride on his motorcyle around Memphis.

One of the places they go is the Accursed Zone: From Southern north to Central and from East South Parkway west to S. McLean. All the buildings are burned-out shells. The fine Victorian houses are crumbling ruins. Only the train-tracks are maintained.

At the corner of Cooper St and Young Avenue, the heart of what used to be Memphis' gay district, there is a two storey high cairn. The rocks are all about the size of a bag of flour. As Nick and Corban come closer, they see bones poking out of the cairn.

It is where the Righteous rose up and cleansed the city of Memphis. Nick shows this to Corban, who is NOT a CSA native, to warn him of the penalties of being gay in this country.

There are plenty who would be more than willing to pick up those rocks, in the name of God and family values and manhood, just in case you, my constant reader, thinks I exaggerate.

In better news than California:

Kathleen Carswell has her first book out with Loose Id (http://www.loose-id.com/prod-Slow_Thaw-948.aspx). "Slow Thaw" is a really good novella about a two couples who are on the rocks. Jim is tired of plus-size Cassandra. Model Christine is bored with photographer Nick. Cassandra is a great protagonist.

Kathleen is a nice lady. I got to meet her at a convention while she was working on this. Nope, no paranormal, no psychos, no spaceships. Just four people trying to make their lives work.

Bun is off on her first job hunt. We hit six places today, and she's filling out apps now.

My Amber Quill contract is in the mail. YAY.

There is a GLBT authors' wiki now. And I'm in it.
As of right now, only the novels have their own pages.

Am headed to bed early, ~8:30 my time. Naomi, if I miss you, sorry.
