So I watched Beckett. Slash city!
Henry II was canonically pansexual. And he loves Thomas Beckett with a mad passion in this. But, despite marrying Henry ("I give you this ring, the Lion Seal of England, as token of your office.") he gives the ring back when he has to marry God as the Archbishop of Canturbury
"Were he a faithless woman you would behave no differently," sighs Henry's mother.
On and on about how much they love each other.
Also, the night Henry's concubine dies, he boots Thomas's bedwarmer, and announces "I don't want to be alone. I'm sleeping here tonight."
Had it been closed-captioned, I'd be writing missing scenes right now...

Date: 2003-07-07 06:05 am (UTC)Hee! As has probably been guessed, I adore this movie. Not a great film of our time, but one of the slashiest movies I've ever seen.
What gets me is not that they constantly say how much they love each other--Henry yammers on about it, especially--but that everyone else comments on it, even if sneeringly. "I have tolerated your mistresses, sir, but do not expect me to tolerate everything! Becket! Always Becket!" (I'll restrain myself from going on, since I can pretty much quote the whole movie.)
I love that however emotionless and distant Becket is, including with his own mistress (who was the one who actually killed herself when Henry tried to take her), the most emotion he shows is not for God, but for Henry: "Did you ever love me?" "In as much as I was capable of love: Yes, I did." "Did you start to love God more?" "I started to love...the honor of God." (Okay, so I didn't restrain myself for long. *g*) Even here, he puts an intellectual distance between himself and God. There's no saint's passion involved--which is pretty true-to-life, in its way.
And rather than go on in analysis of the film--which I could and might do in my own lj, at some point--I'll just say: Glad you liked it! *g*

I admit, I did wonder. *g* It's a movie that's not mentioned or seen nearly as much as, say, "The Lion in Winter"--at least partially because LiW is technically a much better movie. *g*
The whole beach scene just *got* me.
Oh, man, yes. It's the best! "I'm cold." "I'm cold, too...now." *sigh* Actually, weirdly, my other favorite scene is between Henry and the Archbishop of London, where Henry's feeling all tormented about what he wants to do to Thomas--while still planning to do it--and the Bishop is going, "You still love him!" and starts deriding Becket. And Henry just turns on the bishop, choking him, and says, "I confessed my hate to you, not my love. For the good of the country, you will help me take him down, but don't ever insult him again."
Okay, I love pretty much all the scenes. *g*
