[livejournal.com profile] huntpress has an essay on pre-orders.

I'd never really given it much thought.

But [livejournal.com profile] saraphina_marie has Labyrinth of the Dead up for pre-order. My own Shell-Shocked is available for pre-order.

And I just put it all together. The printing company does not charge for set-up if we order 50 copies of a book. Even ten or twenty pre-orders helps defray the cost of that first order. It gives the publisher reason to believe they will sell all 50 books. The waived set-up fee can be applied to publicity.

Also, Apex is throwing in goodies. And Pink Petal is offering a better discount than I can.

I agree fully. Pre-orders put money in our pocket that is needed for various things (usually paying cover artists and editors). Right now, all of that for Storm Moon Press comes out of our pockets. I don't mind doing that because I believe in the small press and what we can do, but pre-orders will be vitally important. Our first two books go up for pre-order in June, and we plan on offering discounts and specials for those who pre-order from us.

But pre-orders offer funds to us long before the books ship, and it allows for more to be done than we could otherwise do without them.
