Commander Cliff Cody of the Space! Exploration! Rangers! (please do that in a Daffy Duck as Duck Dodgers voice for full effect) and his husband, pilot Jake Maggert have been mothballed since the failed graduation exercise that killed half the cadets and their other husband, Frank. Cliff has some mechanical limbs and Jake lost his eyes in the accident.
But now, the Brass has called the widowers out of mothballs for what looks to be a suicide mission, because there's nothing more embarassing than crippled heroes hanging around.
