Obama is not even sworn in and Wildest Wingnuttia is already calling for secession.

My basic response is "Good bye. Lotsa luck. Don't worry about writing. We'll be getting on with civilization here, thanks."

I'm not sure we wouldn't be better off letting them have a chunk of land, putting big fences up on the border and letting anyone out who wanted to emigrate when the charm of living under a theocracy palls.

Isn't this thing sort of been in the wind for a while now already? I mean, isn't that what South Dakota is? A hyer-conservative enclave just waiting for a reason?

I think it won't work, but it's interesting they're so overt about it already.

I think they should get the small chunk of land, preferrably somewhere that's practically seceded already, like Montana or Idaho--with the following provisos:

* Wingnuttia--the country MUST have a name--is to have no sewer system and no reservoirs when it is given to the secessionists, and cannot tap into the sewer systems and/or reservoirs of Americans whose land borders on Wingnuttia.

* Wingnuttia is to have no roads and no highways when given to the secessionists. Since the Wingnuts have no desire to have anything to do with America, it wouldn't make any sense.

* Wingnuttia is not to have any airports, seaports, or lakeports, either, when it is given to the secessionists.

* There will be no mail between America and Wingnuttia. As Wingnuts do not care to belong to America, obviously they would not wish to hear anything about it.

* There will be no banking system--no savings accounts, no checking accounts, no checks and no cash. Checks will not be mailed to Wingnuts, nor will checks from Wingnuttia be honored. Credit card companies will not honor the credit of Wingnuts, either.

* There will be no legal system and no criminal justice system. No cops. No lawyers. No judges. And no jails.

* Schools, libraries, hospitals, stores and houses will likewise not be provided. The Wingnuts get land. Nothing else.

* The Wingnuts are only allowed to bring what they can carry personally. As they are refugees from both America and reality, they shall be treated as such.

* They are not, however, allowed to bring weapons or ammo. Wingnuttia is, after all, supposed to be a utopia, so there is no point in bringing weapons into the proposed Garden of Eden.

* There will be no trade between America and Wingnuttia. No food, furniture, housing materials, clothes, cars, Bibles or arms and armaments. This is known as the "root, hog, or die!" clause.

* Children of Wingnuts--those under eighteen, at any rate--are not allowed to move to Wingnuttia. Those of school age will be placed in excellent boarding schools with superb programs in science, logic and debate and will be permitted to see their parents every three months or so in supervised visits outside of Wingnuttia. Smaller children will be placed with Americans who live near Wingnuttia as it is obvious that a baby or a toddler needs food, warm clothing and shelter. Doubtless it will cheer their parents to know that they can stick to their principles by starving and freezing and still have healthy and happy children.

I've heard Iran is a nice little theocracy. After all, Muslim and Christian fundies aren't all that different. They could have a new best friend in them, really. They can't get away with hanging gay teenagers over here, after all (and you *know* they creamed their jeans at hearing that story).

I feel much the same way, but i also think that the particular brand of wingnuttiness that has worked overtime to make our lives hell is dying out -- literally. Something like 80+% of teenagers raised in conservative Christian churches flee as soon as they're old enough to move out. The movement has no future. We just have to wait them out at this point, and their political influence is already waning.

I should add, that part of what keeps me from saying, "Yeah, goodbye and good riddance," is the very large number of people i've known throughout my life who are ex-conservative ex-Christians. Myself included.
