Thinking hard on the future
Jun. 28th, 2008 04:02 pmFirst, from our "Liberal Media My Wide-Load Ass" department:
Friday, Obama and Clinton held a party unity rally. I caught a few moments of it on Fox News as I filled my waterbottle. The menu bars were all red. The word "ALERT" flashed, yes flashed, on the footer tab.
On the side bar was a freezeframe picture of a cheek kiss.
The thing that clinched it was the klaxon alarm and the anchor yelling over their speeches "Fear! Fire! Foes! Awake! Flee! Flee the scary black and female people! Flood! Fire! Famine! Forty Years of Darkness! Dogs and cats, living together! Awake! Awake!"
(okay, I made the last bit up, but the flashing "ALERT!" on a red background sure set the tone)
All right onward.
The state of the nation.
Here's where Angel breaks out her cloudy crystal ball.
1) Fuel prices will continue to rise. This has a two-fold effect: prices on every type of goods rise and people spend more of their income on gas to get to work, thus having less to spend on everything else.
2) As a result of 1, we will continue the downward consumption spiral we've been in for a couple of years. This means stores close and more people out of work.
3) We will elect Obama in November. He will promptly be blamed for EVERY problem he inherited from the Bush administration. He will either turn out to be the next FDR or he'll be a one-term president, no matter how much improvement he makes in the economy.
4) Having had four years of the perfect scapegoat, the GOP plutocrats and fascists return in greater numbers to power. "See? the stupid libs couldn't fix it. That's because the government SHOULDN'T fix it. Pull yourselves up by your own damn bootstraps, you lazy irresponsible whiners, and be Rugged Individuals." Worst case, they focus on how stupid the US was to elect a black man president, and see how much of the Civil Rights legislation they can manage to undo.
5) The war in Iraq will continue, under both regimes. As more people find themselves unable to make a living, they will enlist, supplying fresh meat for the slaughter.
6) An equilibrium will be reached between prices, wages and distribution or the country will disintegrate. Like Rome before it, the sheer size of the US works against holding it together. Like late-period Rome, we aren't taking care of our infrastructure, letting it crumble because "taxes are theft."
It's going to pan out ugly, folks.
Everyone I know is having bad dreams that are suggesting stocking up on survival gear might not be a bad thing.
Buy heirloom seeds to plant your gardens.
Build a solar oven.
Hang a clothesline.
Other than that, I can't see much.
