Nick Harper would be the first to tell you he had a nice life, much better than he deserved. He'd landed a job at his uncle's car dealership right out of college, and paid off his small student loan. He had a nice duplex, and a fat savings account. It wasn't quite enough to put a down payment on a house, though, and that, he told himself, was why he hadn't set a date with his pretty fiancee, Lisa.

He kept busy anyway. Sunday was church, dinner with Lisa, and evening church. Monday was his bowling league and Tuesday he worked late so he could get off Friday at four and then went straight to the Men's Bible Study. Wednesday was church again, and Thursday he led his nephew's cub scout pack. On Fridays, he could be found cheering for the Raymore Peculiar Panthers, whether on the gridiron, the court or the diamond. He only worked a half-day on Saturday.

Saturday was Lisa's. He'd get off at noon and pick her up. She didn't drive. They'd go for a late lunch and run errands. Then they usually went to the park and had a picnic supper, weather permitting. They talked about everything: politics, religion, their plans, their hopes.

She was a nice girl. But Nick fought a constant battle against his own desires. Any lustful thought that intruded on his mind was quickly consigned to the dustbin while he indulged in some exercise or a ice cold shower.

He had no television. He did not take Lisa to the movies. He read some of the newspaper, but screened the stories carefully. There could be nothing to provoke lust. He wanted to go to Lisa as pure as she was coming to him, despite the two instances in college, of which he had heartily repented.
