Pretty much that of Rome.

When the mid-east oil stopped flowing, the infrastructure could not sustain such an enormous country.

Texas has always threatened secession and now it was one of the first to go. They also expelled all their Mexican and Native American citizenry, deporting them to the Dakotas.

The CSA is the Christian Dominionists' wet dream. It's run entirely on Old Testament law mixed with a dose of Jim Crow. Public executions are held every first Friday, unless it's really important, and televised.

The US has gone socialist, and Pacifica has some tendencies. California is wide open. Heartland has this notion that if it tries hard enough it can make life JUST like it is in The Music Man and State Fair. (They are trying to live in the past that wasn't.)

Question: Were you planning, or did you want, to have this map in the beginning of the book?

I just did it up last night as an updated version (I found the old ones I'd made in 2005)

That's definitely something to talk to Devon about, as I know as a reader, I always find maps helpful. I think since we're dealing with unfamiliar boundaries in a familiar world, a map is especially good for this series.
