I was afraid of that. I considered giving it a try, but am not sure it'd be worth the amount of rewrites it needs

Personally, I had the most terrible time locating the SW in it. Almost put me off, till I let it ride on its own merits. Of course, I was reading Rosemary Sutcliff at the time...
IMO it's do-able.
