“Add it up” is a Hunter-focused Queer as Folk vid, by
carrots1979.
Let me say first, I have no ear for musical subtleties, so I’m not actually ignoring them, I’m just not aware of them.
At 3:09, it feels long. Hunter is a very minor character. He has a great arc, but there just isn’t a lot of footage of him. I can’t tell where to cut, because looking analytically, the storyline is all there. There is a lot of “talky face.” While this gives us Hunter’s anger and confusion (especially at Brian’s unwillingness to take him up on several offers), it starts to feel redundant. Perhaps greater use of motion would help.
The opening is very strong, with Hunter coming on to Brian. The naughty wink (such a rare thing to see from anyone these days) on “I know what to do” is terrific.
However, use of the purple filter on the instrumental section at 20-31 seconds left me going “is her source that bad?” until I realized it was deliberate.
The transition to his girlfriend at 42 when the song changes styles from the petulant demands of the teen hustler to the rather more brooding sound of an average kid works very nicely.
The “ooo Mama mama” sections of the chorus are set to the bits we see of Hunter’s mother. It all feels in context especially when you hit the lyric “take a look now at what your boys has done.” According to Hunter, his mother was the one who pushed him into prostitution, so shots of him out hustling are effective at this point. On the second chorus, her wiping her mouth after he’s deep-kissed her and told her he’s HIV+ on the line “add it up” works perfectly, but it is context dependent. This is a vid for fans of the series who know Hunter’s story.
The bit where he comes to Brian with the DNA of the killer (I’m being overly polite here) feels far too long and the use of negative and positive images does not speed it up, but rather seems to drag it out.
I’m not an effects fan and the jittery, wavey, filtered section during the next guitar solo were quite jarring.
Around 2, we go almost textbook literalist for a few seconds, which is fine, since it fits Hunter’s wishful thinking, about the new home he is making with Michael and Ben.
The end seems to fit. Hunter has moved into a new phase, symbolized by his return to school, and his having added up the options he has: street kid, mom, or Michael and Ben.
This is definitely for fans of the series. It is a good Hunter vid.
