Ever have a moment when you want to slap someone?
I've hit two within a week.

1) The Christianity and fandom panel. Some of those women could NOT get through their heads that what Harry Potter calls witchcraft bears absolutely no resemblence to Wicca. It offended them when I said "Wiccan magic looks a lot more like your prayers than it looks like waving a wand or brewing potions. The latter comes straight out of Christian European pre-science. The former are both religious activities."

2) I wish there was a way to reach through a computer and smack sense ont someone. A straight woman on the LGBT forum at Gojabber says, and I quote:
"This is something I don't understand. Maybe I am ignorant but why would they want their own tv channel? If people want to be part of society and accepted then why do they feel they need to be separated? The gays fight so hard to be loved and accepted and then decided well guess what we want our own society? I don't understand?"

A man responds: "STARDUST, i have the same problem. We have black channel,Mexican Channel,Christian channels We scream equality. Discrimination and then go a seperate but equal route.
I too am confused. "

When I try to explain niche marketing, I get:
"If that is the way you see it. Then we could have solved the race problem by building corporations for blacks, baseball teams for blacks, schools for
blacks, black police forces and fire departments etc. I was under the impression they did not want seperate but equal."

I finally said his arguments sounded like he wanted 1 TV channel with mandatory viewing. Because that is the only way we'll all be equal.

I hate when people say i can't have something. And straights saying "Now why would THOSE PEOPLE want their own station? Why do they have to be gay on the airwaves too?" just irritates the living daylights out of me.

I don't watch BET or MTV or Telemundo or The Golf Channel, but I don't question why anyone would want them.

I have lost all patience with that argument.

How many straight people -- or presumed straight people -- are shown on the supposedly "neutral" television channels?

And how many gay?

So that's why we need gay channels. Because it's not a matter of most TV being neutral and one little channel being gay. It's about most TV being STRAIGHT and one little channel being gay, that's why.

Those fucking people are so stupid and self-centered that they see "straight and normal" as "neutral and value-free." It's like explaining water to a fish.

Dumbfucks.

But... but... but... wiccans are *always* turning people into various animals, and flying, and stuff, right?

I once tried to explain the value of private, predominantly black colleges/universities to a white male gay friend. He saw it as elitism. I said it was more about support systems. He just didn't get it. Then he went to San Francisco for an extended vacation. He came back and apologized for his previous white majority attitude, because now he understood the difference it makes having outlets just for your minority.

People who have never been in the minority or who may be in a minority but have never experienced its fellowship just do not understand.

I'm confused. These slapping-candidates are Christians? And they're opposed to HP because they think it promotes someone else's religion? Or because it doesn't? ?? Why were they offended by: Wiccan magic looks a lot more like your prayers than it looks like waving a wand or brewing potions -- because other religions saying prayers is encroaching on Christian turf? Or what?

The slapping candidates are Christian.
They are opposed to HP because they think it promotes Wicca.

The were offended by the comparision of Christian Prayers to Wiccan Spells. Because the former is worshipping God, and the latter is just wickedness.

behold my innocence!

I truly don't get how someone can be involved in sf/fandom and yet have a mind that clearly doesn't get out much.

What are these people *fans* of?!?!??

Yes, I'm innocent. And naive. And overly-trusting. *shakes head* It's a sad, sad day.

Actually they were all "Well, we have to be careful with HP, and let our kids know it's just a story or they'll become Wiccan."

These ladies (and there were no men in the room) tended to be Star Trek, Stargate and cop show fans.

Christianity is an all-or-nothing sort of thing. For Christianity to be right, every other belief system in the world is wrong. Ergo, praying to the Goddess/Buddha/Allah/your ancestors is no different than praying to the Devil, because you aren't praying to the Christian God.

I did point out that all SF was evil because Christians know what the future holds and so far none of the shows reflect that. Most reflect a humanist, if not actively atheist, view of the future. No one is out showing the earth being destroyed in battle as Jesus comes back, therefore the movies and shows are BAD.

But, as i did mention, you can take the girl out of fundamentalism, but yars of Bible abuse will leave their mark. I can quote the world-view with scary accuracy, to the point some people were asking "You did say recovering fundamentalist, right?"
