Yuletide Youtube 8: Ponder Day
Dec. 27th, 2016 01:02 pm"It seemed to Hazel that he would not be needing his body any more, so he left it lying on the edge of the ditch, but stopped for a moment to watch his rabbits and to try to get used to the extraordinary feeling that strength and speed were flowing inexhaustibly out of him into their sleek young bodies and healthy senses.
The primroses were blooming." --Watership Down
I woke to the news today that both Richard Adams and Carrie Fisher had died.
As I did that dreadful morning when Ray Bradbury died, I was tempted to go back to bed.
But no, it's all part of getting older.
Adams was 96. He had a full life and a long career. And if he feels he won't be needing his body any more, that's all right.
Fisher was 60, 11 years older than me. She had a heart attack on a plane. Her addictions and mental illness had both taken their toll on her body. She was an inspiration to those of us with mental illness, saying that yes, we could be successful, we could do things. Delusions of Grandma remains my favorite of her books.
In the Nativity story, we're told "Mary pondered all these things." Robert Fulghum talks about setting aside a Ponder Day after the holidays, just to reflect and contemplate and ponder.
Today seemed like a good one.

From Delusions of Grandma, a conversation that has come up many times in my writing partnerships:
"That's it. I'm daunted." he threw down the manuscript.
"Well if you're daunted, I'm fucked."
"Daunted and Fucked. Sounds like a vaudeville team."
Privately, they called the project Daunted and Fucked until it was done.
