The first three episodes were good, really good. The pilot gives us a nice set-up and a good case. Poem, which I had previously thought dull, is actually a very solid ep. It's different, and the pace is a little slower than most. Heat is where we learn that Stone's task is not always going to be easy or pleasant for him. It's not going to be as clear-cut as murderous priests and poets.

But the fourth episode, "Encore", is WRENCHING.

Spoilers for a 20 year old show:

This is the episode where Peter Horton shines hard and bright and painful as Zeke Stone. Stone has flashbacks to the day Rosalyn was raped. Horton makes us feel his anguish at her pain. And we watch helplessly as his pain multiplies through the episode as he deals with Jax's other victims.

The alley scene, where he's realized who his target is, is pure anger. Yet it feels like a form of prayer. However, God doesn't hear Ezekiel Stone anymore, and it's not addressed to him anyway.

Mrs. Jax, the target's mom, is so deceived and manipulated. And this is more pain, another stab wound for Ezekiel. He's going to have to break this nice lady's already-shattered heart. Except, she knows. She knows everything.

The flashbacks of Rosalyn are just agonizing. A woman weeping in a shower stall, nothing more, but our hearts break a little more every time we have one.

After the tattoo burns off, Stone looks peaceful for the first time in the episode. He finally has his closure.

The shoelace business is the perfect end.
