Movies for 2015
Dec. 31st, 2015 11:26 pmI started the year with the final Hobbit movie and ended it with the new Star Wars.
That latter needs its own post. But ZOMG! I still have all the feels.
The list is under the Cut. * are Rewatches
1) The Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies: Beautiful movie, but way too long. Loved Billy Connelly as Dain. But it was also the movie of ridiculous elf-fu and silly battle mounts.
2) Disney's Wind in the Willows*: Not nearly as good as the book. Fairly silly at first bit gets into it
3) A Knight's Tale*: A fun Medieval romp.
4) The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug*: Possibly the best of the movies.
5) The Woman in Black: Very good ghost story, tense and tight.
6) The Last Starfighter: Somehow, i had never managed to see this. Great fun and Robert Preston in his last role
7) Snatch. Funny heist movie.
8) Johnny Dangerously*: Still holds up. Still hilarious. The crudity of some parts could have been removed without damaging the film. Michael Keaton at his manic best.
9) Young Lady Chatterley*: Soft core 70s porn. Still works
10) Inception: Launched me into a new fandom.
11) Horns: Interesting little thriller/horror piece.
12) The Great Mouse Detective*: Disney's brilliant Sherlock Holmes homage, based on the writings of Eve Titus.
13) The Brothers Bloom*: A conman movie, with Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo. Rachel Weisz is awesome.
14) Nightbreed*: I'd seen this, but never understood it, even after reading the book. This time, with Captions, I got it.
15) Houdini: So good! I've been a Houdini fan since single digits and this movie just did it for me.
16) The Asphyx: Hammer horror of the early 70s. Not bad, intriguing concept.
17) Constantine: Based on the graphic novel. John Constantine has to stop the apocalypse. Tilda Swinton is fabulous in it.
18) Hero Wanted: Tommy Flanagan and Norman Reedus. I had to see it. Unfortunately, it was a waste of their talent.
19) Noises Off: Screamingly funny theater comedy about backstage romance.
20) Iron Jawed Angels: Historical drama about Women's Suffrage.
21) Raiders of the Lost Ark*: Watched this on an open air screen, and a warm summer night with my teenage son. Possibly the last time I'll get to do this.
22) Donovan's Brain: 50's brain horror. A classic of the genre and deservedly
23) The Producers (remake): It's a musical. And it's great fun. Zero Mostel is much missed, but Nathan Lane shows his cops.
24) The Quiet Man: John Wayne as a retired boxer who moves to ireland. My dad's favorite film, and I asked him to share it with me.
25) Inside Out: ALL. The FEELS! Saw this twice and cried both times.
26) Big Fish: Really good movie about the stories we tell ourselves and each other.
27) Stepford Wives: Ira Levin writes bleak humor/horror. And Stepford was no exception. Except this time, they made it an explicit comedy. I LOVED Bette Midler in this.
28) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone*
29) Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets*
30) Harry Potter and the Prisoner on Azkaban*
31) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*
32) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix*
33) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince*
34) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 1*
35) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2*
36) Quills: Life of the Marquise De Sade. Very sexy, without any sex at all.
37) Deuce Bigelow, Male Gigolo*: Sex comedy with minimal sex. Watched this with the kids.
38) Overtime: I know one of the actors. Pretty good horror comedy. The zombie apocalypse is breaking out, but the guys have to get to the kid's birthday party on time.
39) Gallowswalkers: Creepy Weird Western with Wesley Snipes. One of the best I saw.
40) Addams Family*: Always a delight
41) Sordid Lives: When the matriarch of a southern family dies, her daughters have to deal with each other and their gay brother and one's gay son. Delta Burke and Bonnie Bedelia carry this film, but Leslie Jordan as Brother Boy steals the show.
42) Hercules*; Disney version. Still not very good.
43) Corpse Bride*: This holds up. I'd only seen it once, in theaters. And it's excellent stop motion work.
44) From Dusk Til Dawn*: Sometimes you just need a vampire fix. And this was even more fun than last time.
45) The Village: yeah. I knew the twist going in. It was all right and not a terrible movie. But not great.
46) A Killing Affair: Sordid little Southern melodrama.
47) The Oblong Box: More Hammer horror.
48) Moving Target: Teens on the run when the family goes into Witness Protection.
49) Masquerade: Treachery on Long Island as a scheming stepfather tries to get his stepdaughter married and killed.
50) Last shift: Rookie cop has to watch over the closing police station for the last night and let the hazmat team in. Except...it's haunted.
51) Sky High: Children of Superheroes face the usual growing up problems, as well as supervillains. This was great fun and I adore Kurt Russell.
52) Cast Deadly Spell*: Decent Urban/Noir Fantasy. But is there a way to do a Lovecraft oriented movie that isn't racist, sexist and homophobic? The only black person who isn't a zombie is the landlady witch, a literal magical Negro. And the plot hinges on a character's virginity. Of course the obligatory romance subplot is all growly and hate-sex after a bad breakup. Not to mention the gay couple (one of whom is a crossdresser, probably trans) both die because they stole from the wrong person.
53) House of the Long Shadows: An author bets his publisher he can write a novel in 24 hours. But bets are off when the remote location is a revolving door. Based on Seven Keys to Baldpate, and starring Lee, Price, Carradine and Cushing.
54) Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Merp! I am officially 10 years old for the rest of the night.
Best of the year:
Star Wars
Big Fish
The two Hobbits
Inception
Houdini
Iron Jawed Angels
Great Mouse Detective
Worst of the Year:

The Oblong Box
Hercules
A Killing Affair
It was quite the year of Daniel Radcliffe with 10 movies.
I also did a complete Sons of Anarchy Rewatch, clear through Season 7
The Smallville Rewatch died in Season 5, with Jonathan Kent.
Watched all of Supernatural, up through Season 10.
I'm into Season 2 of Twilight Zone, 4 of Criminal Minds and a few Once Upon a Times.
That latter needs its own post. But ZOMG! I still have all the feels.
