4 loads of laundry (3 more tomorrow) and broke 60,000 words on terror. Another 7-10k should do it nicely. More on the attack, kidnap Charlie in London. The big reveal. And then off to maying and the end.

Gone a-maying is a better term.

Come let us all a-Maying go,
And lightly, and lightly trip it to and fro.
The bells shall ring,
And the cuckoo sing.
The drums shall beat, the fife shall play,
And so we'll spend our time away. (John Hilton ~1630)

The first of May is Beltane and many of the celebrations lingered well into the 19th century.

Or as Edward puts it:
Edward smiled. “I thought May Day would be the right day for it. The village will be bursting with greenery. It's one of the few places that still has a Maypole. Young lovers pledge themselves to each other and old married folks kiss under the bowers, remembering their own youth. The vicar says it's all pagan nonsense, but you can't argue with long tradition.”

And from the actual scene:
Charlie watched the young people dance to the ancient music, circling the Maypole. Robert danced among them, weaving his white ribbon over and under the girls' red ribbons.

“Oh, it's all very naughty,” one white haired lady in a lavender hat said as she leaned over and patted Charlie on the arm. “But we danced when we were young too. Why aren't you out there, dear?”

“I'm just visiting from America,” Charlie told her.

“That's lovely, dear.” Her attention returned to the young people, but the far-away look told Charlie she was remembering the long-ago May when she had danced with a red ribbon of her own.
