13. Best pumpkin carving you’ve done
I never did do them very well. We always made the carving a Halloween activity because I always cooked them on November 1. I let the kids do it once the safe carving kits came out.

Excerpt:
The room went quiet again. The little noises of the children's movements and breathing kept it from being silent. Anne waited, feeling her eyelids getting heavier. She shouldn't be tired. She'd had a good day's sleep. But the warm little bodies on her and all their soft noises made her feel drowsy there in the blackness.
"Are you awake, Miss Anne?" one of the girls at her side whispered.
"Mmm," she mumbled.
"I still think she's one of the bad people," a boy said. Anne couldn't even muster energy to answer. "She doesn't love Jesus anymore."
"Open her mouth," Pat ordered.
The cell phone light was back in her face, blinding her, as small hands, much too strong for their size, pried her mouth open. Little fingers, slightly sticky and too cool, traced over her teeth. She blinked against the glare and struggled back to full wakefulness.
Pat leaned in, and Anne saw her fangs. "I knew you were one of the bad people, Miss Anne. But we can make you a good person."
Now she bit down on the hands in her mouth and summoned what energy she could to try moving the children off of her. More piled on top of her.
"I remember you from long ago. You called me Patience then." She felt Pat's fangs on her throat, tearing a great swath of it open so she couldn't speak or scream. More took her in the wrist and inner elbow. She felt something odd and heard the ripping of fabric. Fangs pierced her ankle and knee, and one adventurous set sank into her thigh.
Although she struggled, her strength seeped away as the children fed. They couldn't turn her, but they could feed off of her for a long time. Knowing she would wake up was no comfort at all.
