This is what we call Irish Planning.

I have been awake for almost 36 hours. If this still makes sense when I wake up, I'll take it under consideration.

Kickstarter or Indiegogo Campaign:

The Year of Writing Dangerously

The goal is to raise enough money that I can live on it and write books, to be published through Inkstained Succubus for cost effectiveness.

Steps:

1) figure out how MUCH money. Living Expenses and publishing expenses. Convention Travel expenses.
2) Figure out rewards.
3) Make video
4) Set up Livejournal/Blogger for the contributors to talk to.

During this year, defined as 12 months, I must write 3 novels and 6 short stories. That's about 200,000 words, which isn't quite 1000 words a day.

Reward ideas (Each level includes all the previous rewards):

Included in the dedication
Early releases
Paperbacks
A vote on which story comes next
A book signing in your city.
My backlist

So I throw this out to you, my loyal readers, friends and fanbase: Do you think I could potentially raise about $60,000 for expenses and publishing and travel? Do you have ideas for rewards?

The D-Man Checks In

Sadly: NO. Mostly & mainly because I do not believe that there are...

A.) Enough of us -- your loyal readers, friends, and fan-base -- to conjure forth sufficient spare $$$ from our own overly debt-laiden lives & coffers to do much more than cover our own expenses, much less/more somebody else's. Even if there were 60 of us, how many could afford to hand out $1000 (either in one lump sum or at $83+/month) to fund somebody else lighting, heating, air-conditioning, feeding, fixing, and otherwise running their own household, plus publishing + running hither & yon, when we all have our own to think about & make priorities for? ...And that is presuming 60 of us. If (likely) fewer, that cost, for those of us not already blessed with $1000+ just lying around -- collecting dust -- for lack of any immediate good uses, will only go up & beyond the whopping figure it already stands at for 60 of us. I mean, DANG! $84 would nearly pay for my monthly electric, or cable TV, or car insurance bill, right there. Don't even start me on my food & mortgage bills, plus my wife's medical bills. Great Powers That Be help me if one of the cats needs to go to the vet, or if the house or a vehicle needs a major repair. I just cannot believe the followers nor the funds are there, babe.

B.) Sufficient reward at the end of the year (other than your happiness, which we all do certainly value, even if we are realistically unable to directly nor sustainably fund it). Personally-speaking, if I am going to fork out $1000/year or $83+/month to support you or anyone, I expect that person parked in my guest room at my house for at least 2-3 weeks. You can write while I am out working, or sleeping, or otherwise pre-occupied with my own life & family matters. When I am not working, slumbering in my shadow-haunted crypt, or otherwise pre-occupied, you're mine to visit with & entertain... presuming I could get my wife to agree to such an arrangement (which is highly doubtful).

C.) Sufficient controlling interest in the investment. If I am going to fork out $1000/year or $83+/month to finance any enterprise/writer, I regard this as then being like a share-holder in a company, which therefore better grant me a say in what direction that company moves in... or, in your case, what kind of stories are going to be written on my dollar; not just a vote on what story is going to come next on the list of 5-6... and if I am displeased with the return on my investment or the direction the company is moving in, I can either cash out & invest my money elsewhere, or reduce or refuse further funding until things turn better to ways of my greater liking.

SUGGESTION: Consider selling stock in Inkstained Succubus. Financial returns/dividends expected to be small, but for such & such an investment, you get some interest/say in current/future stories. The more stock you own, the more interest/say you have.

For X amount: You can put forth storyline suggestions; this is to say the author will consider changes and/or additons to a story in the works if suggestions made are found to have sufficient merit (and the editor agrees). Being able to put forth suggestions does not guarantee said suggestions will be more than duly considered, but they can be made, although for XX or XXX amount... said such suggestion(s) will be reconsidered, or seriously reconsidered yet again.

For Y amount: You can put forth a story outline, which the author will write if the storyline is found to have sufficient merit, but the author controls what happens & how, as applicable, between points A-B-C-D... etcetera. For X amount invested on top of Y, you can put forth suggestions, which will be considered. For XX or XXX amount... refer to above.

For Z amount: You can control/finance a whole book, but the author has to agree to accept the storyline (no dramatically altering already existing worlds nor killing off certain already established key characters, unless the author finds such a storyline has sufficient merit, and so maybe it is time for some dramatic changes).

Stock portfolio, showing investors & their rankings in the company based on financial contributions, and projects invested/involved, in will be posted & updated on the Inkstained Succubus website.

I reduced the initial goal to one month.

If everyone on my facebook flist kicks in $5, we fund the month. If everyone on LJ added $5, we'd make the audiobook goal as well. And that means everyone would get a copy of the book, as well as an acknowledgment.

If everyone went $20 and got the paperback, not only would I have to write 1150 thank-you notes BY HAND, my results would be nearly six months of writing.

I'm not asking anyone to hand me a grand, although if someone does, there're some major perks for it.

You can't just decide to sell stock of a company for fun and giggles. It's a long complicated process. Private offerings might be possible in an unincorporated business, but would still need to be registered with the state SEC, and need to be overseen by an investment attorney, which will quickly eat up any profits with legal fees on a business this size. Also very questionable if stock profits can be used by the CEO for personal expenses, anyway.

I am also concerned about the $5000 level perk listed on the fundraising page. Though I highly doubt anyone will donate $5000, I can't see how a BDSM "scene" as a reward for a donation isn't prostitution, and would likely get your entire project deleted for being illegal offerings as a "perk".

It's not prostitution if there no sex. A BDSM scene, in a public venue almost never includes sex. In fact the venues I mentioned specifically forbid it.

Apologies for the anon comment. LJ logged me out in mid-posting for some reason.

Happens to all of us. We'll see how it goes. So far, most folks are going for $5 or $20.
