AJ recognized Roman the moment his writing partner stepped into the checkout line. Handsome, in a rawboned way, he caught AJ's eye and winked. The only thing not the same as the pictures was his aura. It radiated black flame tipped in blue all over his body and AJ could almost see a shadow of batwings.

More from training than any thought, AJ kept checking out the woman with the picture frames and silk flowers. His mind screamed Incubus even as he said, "Forty-sent, fifty, ma'am." Only incubi and succubi came with flame auras. He remember a lecture on the pleasures and perils of such demon lovers, and wondered for an instant if old Alistair had been speaking from experience.

The woman had given him a bit of breathing space. As Roman stepped up and laid an expensive chocolate bar on the counter, AJ grabbed the phone and hit PA.

"Attention, shoppers. The time is nine o'clock and your CraftWorld is closed for the night. Please bring your selections to the checkout. CraftWorld will open again at nine in the morning. Thank you for your business."

Three women wended their way toward the register and AJ had recovered himself enough not to be flustered as he turned to ring up the candy. "Of all the craft stores in all the world, he walks into mine."

Roman laughed and AJ would have sworn that the women sped up, just to see him. "Hello, AJ."

Yep, he had his aura on full blast. AJ pressed closer to the checkout counter to hide the growing erection in his pants. Roman's smile made him feel as though he was the only person in the world.

"Three twenty-nine, please," he read off the register. Roman swiped his card.

"I'll be waiting when you get off." AJ tried not to bite his lower lip at that statement. "So sweep up in a hurry. I want to feed the chocolate to you, bit by melting bit."

The lady behind Roman cleared her throat and AJ shook himself out of the erotic haze Roman's voice inspired.

"Aren't you-" came a timid voice from three carts back, "Aren't you Roman [Surname]?"

Roman took his receipt and stepped away from the counter. He turned the full force of the smile on the girl who had asked, but AJ saw it go from sincere to extra-charming.

"Yes, I am."

AJ listened with half an ear as he rang up the next lady's yard goods and notions.

"I love your books. Is number three due out soon?" The girl, whose face AJ knew relatively well, had fished a well-thumbed paperback out of her purse and was digging for a pen.

Roman kept the charming smile in place, pulled a shiny gold Cross pen from his own pocket and signed it with a flourish. "We just sent off galley proofs last week. That's why I'm in town."

"Oh, promotional event? When and where?"

"No, I'm here with the day job. But I'm here to see my writing partner."

"You're kidding!" she gasped. "Andrew Sorenson lives here?"

AJ tried to catch Roman's eye and tell him no. But instead, he handed the receipt for the last customer's yarn to her. He looked at the young lady.

"Are you buying anything, miss?"

"Oh, yeah." She set a tri-fold board and letters on the counter and made a face. "Project time, AJ. I hate those."

Roman leaned in so close to the girl that AJ was almost jealous. "Emily, do you know what that A stands for?" he whispered in tones that made AJ want to jump the counter, knock the girl out of the way and have him, right there on the floor between checkout and seasonal. The way Emily flushed and her breathing quickened said she was having the same thoughts.

"He's-"

"That's right. Andrew James Sorenson, your friendly neighborhood CraftWorld clerk."

"I'm going to kill you for this," he grumbled.

She thrust the book at AJ, staring as if seeing him for the first time. She swiped her card while he thought about how to sign it.

"For Emily, whose smile always brightens my day. AJ" and the date struck him as adequate. He finished and gave Roman a death glare.

"AJ, we're closed," Fred, his manager said. "We need to lock up. What are you doing?"

AJ smiled brightly. "Making sure my last customer has a perfect CraftWorld experience."

Emily clutched her signed book and grabbed her project stuff. Roman held the door as they left.

Fred watched them leave and asked, "Your boyfriend?"

"Writing partner, in from the Coast. Maybe boyfriend. And Emily just found out that AJ the craftWorld Clerk is one of her favorite writers."

Fred smiled. "Sweep up and knock off early. But just for tonight, since you have company from out of town."
