"Christian fundamentalists now hold a majority of seats in 36 percent of all Republican Party state committees, or 18 of 50 states, along with large minorities in 81 percent of the rest of the states. Forty-five Senators and 186 members of the House of Representatives earned between an 80 to 100 percent approval ratings from the three most influential Christian Right advocacy groups - The Christian Coalition, Eagle Forum, and Family Resource Council. Tom Coburn, the new senator from Oklahoma , has included in his campaign to end abortion a call to impose the death penalty on doctors that carry out abortions once the ban goes into place. Another new senator, John Thune, believes in Creationism. Jim DeMint, the new senator elected from South Carolina , wants to ban single mothers from teaching in schools." (emphasis mine)

There are more than 6 million elementary and secondary school students attending private schools and 11.5 percent of these students attend schools run by the Christian Right. These “Christian” schools saw an increase of 46 percent in enrollment in the last decade. The 245,000 additional students accounted for 75 percent of the total rise in private school enrollment.

Read the rest and remember this was 8 years ago.

When I took Oli for testing, the little group of 10-15 homeschoolers I remembered had quadrupled in a decade. And I listened to these women talk as if they were under siege, as if the Powers That Be were allied to turn their children from them, from God and from truth. They were proud that there were black homeschoolers ("It's good to see them stepping and taking responsibility for their children.") when in the early 2000s part of the draw of homeschooling had been avoiding Those People or The Criminal Element.

It's getting worse. I can sound all the alarms I want, but I'm one person. There's a reason women are under attack, why the anti-gay groups have gotten more virulent and baldfaced with their lies. Amanda Marcotte talks about how the right uses the 24 hour media blitz to gaslight people:
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/04/17/anti-choicers-are-gaslighting-the-media-and-the-public/

"One of the things that are making the campaign of lying so frustrating is that many of the lies are bundled within other lies. They know that the most egregious lie they’re telling is so egregious that they can’t say it outright without opening themselves up to slander and libel accusations and possibly even lawsuits (basically, the insinuation that pro-choicers supported Gosnell—so easy to disprove that they won’t say it outright, but will insinuate it heavily), so instead they tell a more diffuse lie—that pro-choicers “ignored” the Gosnell story—with the hope that what they’re insinuating will be filled in by the audience."

(When that lie turned up on my FB feed, I immediately pointed the person to massive media coverage from all sides of the question)

I'm almost too tired to be outraged any more. Christian fascism is coming. We missed the last exit years ago. Orincus chronicled it in his blog then. I'm sorry, kids. But freedom and equality are always a temporary state because we are hierarchical apes. The US gave it a try, and moved steadily toward more and more of it. Then about thirty years ago, we went wrong. And we've gone downhill since.
Welcome to Gilead.
