I have a brave 15 year old son
Feb. 3rd, 2013 08:00 pmJonner is taking Home-Ec this year instead of band. (his idea)
And they're starting the sewing unit. So I had to take him to get fabric. URK!
He really wanted the black polished cotton with blue flames. But $6/yard was going to break the bank. We looked around. The aloha print made him feel like he was being washed out to sea. And I kept saying "plaid" like it was a good thing. (Apparently he objects to plaid because it goes with nothing. My response was "That's the point. You want the Sassenach to see you coming and be terrified." He told me to quit humming "Scots Wha Hae" and keep shopping.)
Finally he found some flannel instead. There was navy blue and baby blue and a couple shades of green and grey and black.
My son, my 15 year old, 6' tall son, chooses bubblegum pink.
Because he likes it best. Because it is a warm color and feels nice.
My son is going to sit in his home-ec class, make himself bubblegum pink sleep pants, bring them home and wear them.
Because it is his choice.
Any boy who did that back in my day would have been ranked out to the dogs and back.
My son is secure in his identity.
(PS, Bubblegum Pink is the name of the thread we got for it. He wasn't quite Ellen Rose or Baby Pink.)

Date: 2013-02-05 08:04 pm (UTC)-Learn to sew.
-Learn to cook.
-Learn to fix a broken zipper & replace a missing button, darn a sock (cheaper than buying a new pair), and mend a rip in just about any clothing material--short of leather.
-Learn to balance a check book.
In my day though, showing up to class as a guy with Bubble Gum Pink fabric would have resulted in the mandatory revocation of my Man Card & endless humiliation... Unless I could say what I was making was for my sister (pretty safe fall-back position & plausible story, if needed, if anyone gives him any guff about it). The times they be a-changin' (maybe).
