Correct me if I'm wrong
Feb. 14th, 2012 04:22 pmAren't the same people who yell "Support Our Troops" the loudest the ones who are also stockpiling guns against having to fight off the government? Who do they think the government is going to send after them, but the very troops they were "supporting" by having a yellow ribbon on their car.
Do they really think it is the Eighteenth or Nineteenth century when hand weapons will do a lick of good against an army? That Magnum is going to be really impressive, if they can't hold it because the Active Denial System has put them in such a world of pain they're running for it. Or when our ever-more-militarized police use any of these six items on the household gun-owner.
That's assuming the government even decides to face the householders. With drones and spy satellites, why not just obliterate the whole house, guns and all?
This is not Cornwallis standing in nice, neat redcoated lines and shooting while you hide behind rocks and trees and shoot back. This is modern warfare, and your opponent doesn't even have to be in the same city.
Sorry, just got off a discussion on facebook, that I don't want to take guns away, I just want gunowners to face facts: a gun in the house is 3 times more likely to kill a household member than an intruder, and is Great-grandma's tchotchke really worth killing or being killed over? The general question is "Can't you just shoot any rapist/mugger/murderer?" For women that answer tends to be "not unless we're willing to kill members of our families."

The D-Man Checks In:
Date: 2012-02-16 07:58 am (UTC)1.) No, I doubt most people in favor of supporting our troops are the same ones stockpiling guns to one day fight off the government. I, for one, am just being patriotic, and supporting my brothers & sisters in arms, as I am no longer on active duty. You can thank the fool 1960's hippies spitting on returing Vietnam vet's for all the Support Our Troops ribbons.
2.) If the government does ever send the troops after "the people," that is taking a dangerous presumption on the politicians' part that the troops will obey the order to advance upon & take down their own; officers & grunts alike. Such orders could well end with the troops turning their guns on the politians instead. Unlike in certain autocratic & tolatitarian countries, American troops (and officers) are allowed to think, and are not obligated to follow unlawful orders... or even orders that violate their own conscience. (A chaplain or a medic cannot be ordered to kill an enemy soldier, or even to take up arms to defend a position--at least not with any great expectation of said order being carried out--and no American soldier can be ordered to knowingly kill unarmed enemy civilians.)
3.) If the troops ever come for the gun-holders, the smart gun-holders ain't gonna be sitting or waiting for them so they can be out-numbered, out-gunned, and overrun. They will fight running battles & use ambush tactics. Same reason the Taliban don't run up a flag & sit on any fortified position. They know they won't & can't win if they do.
4.) I do not have a gun in my house to protect Great-grandma's tchotchke. It's there to protect the sanctity of my house & home, and my peace of mind. The odds of somebody breaking into a home to commit robbery and/or rape go down proportionately to the perception of the would-be thug(s) that he or they will come of bodily harm in the attempt. If great-grandma's tchotchke ain't worth the home-owner dying for, it sure ain't worth dying over for the thief either.

Date: 2012-02-16 09:14 pm (UTC)2) I figure American troops are going to go ahead. Why not?
3) Do your really think the average suburban weekend warrior is going to get out of his recliner, put down his beer, turn off Fox News or Football and go live rough? I don't think so. I know you Montana boys like to think you're all Jeremiah Johnson, but take a good look at your neighbors. They may have guns, but I lay you even odds they don't miss meals and most of them can't cope without electricity and running water.
(After watching the Walking Dead, I've begun to wonder if the average suburbanite can find his own butt with both hands. They can't find water in GEORGIA for crying out loud)
I don't think your Wolverines will have many takers after the first cold week in the hills. They'll all drift back home and take up their lives.
The average person doesn't care what flag flies over them or what their rights are, as long as their lives are not disrupted.
4) I just want to make sure you know that gun is 3 times more likely to be used on your wife than an intruder. Sanctity of the home is sentimentalist bullshit. Burglars want in and out fast, they don't want a confrontation. And you are the most likely rapist in your wife's life, followed by male members of her family, and family friends. Home invasion for rape is fairly rare. Stranger rape is only 4% of the total to start with.
I don't want to take guns away. I just want gun owners to admit they LIKE the idea of shooting a person.
