I don't use my journalism degree, which is partly the fault of the market and partly my own fault. That aside, I do not regret a single literature course I took in college. I'm sure my advisers rolled my eyes at my taking so many, but they've stood me in good stead. Literature has been a consolation to me my whole life, and has kept me on the right side of that thin bright line of sanity more times than I can count.
I hated nearly everything we had to read. And I ended up writing book reports for three years. Sometimes, I was writing book reports about other people's book reports.
Maybe I didn't have the right attitude. I never forgot I had failed out, that I wasn't smart enough for a "real" degree and was stuck in the liberal arts.
