valarltd: (politics--gilead)

This sounds like an extreme statement to be sure. Surely, no political party can last long trying to kill certain parts of the populace?

They may not succeed, but the fact these things are even being TRIED should be cause for alarm, at least among people for whom bigotry is not an actual feature.

Let me be up front: I am a queer, pagan woman. All of these things are anathema to the Republican party as it stands.

The Texas state GOP platform has planks to recriminalize sodomy, make same sex marriage a felony.  Since same-sex marriage is not legal in Texas, one must assume that legally married couples from other states will be treated as dangerous criminals.

American megachurches, hotbeds of conservatism that vote almost unanimously Republican, are financially supporting Uganda's Kill the Gays bill, with an eye to bringing it over here in due time, if it works.

In Minnesota, the state house opened with a prayer from a minister who openly advocates imprisonment and execution of gay people. Also in Minnesota, GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann has lent her financial support to a Christian Rock band that advocates gay execution.

Almost 1000 antiabortion laws have been introduced since November. These include such gems as Georgia Rep Bobby Franklin Who wants to jail women for miscarriages and execute them for abortions. Since 40% of women have abortions and 50% have miscarriages, he has proposed removing 90% of Georgia women.

African witch hunters are becoming popular speakers at some American Christian churches. Link heavy post from The Wild Hunt.

So, I have candidates financially supporting people who call for my execution, states wanting to criminalize what i do in my bedroom, a man who wants to jail me for miscarrying and execute me for having a D&C afterward to clean out the residue. We have church-goers listening to people who advocate hanging my youngest daughter in a barbed wire noose because she is a witch while setting me on fire with kerosene.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Look at the demonization of teachers, and the general disregard for science, and remember Mudd is a science teacher. My parents are on  Medicare, which the Ryan budget wants to dismantle. Bun is on meds that keep her from opening her wrists, and she can stay on them for the next seven years, as long as Republicans don't repeal Obamacare, which they keep trying to do.

So, if there are any Republicans left around here, why do you want to kill me and my family? How can you call yourself my friend and vote for people who want me dead for my faith, my orientation or a malfunction of my repro system? Yes, it really is that personal.

You skipped a bit in your 'up front': insert working. They don't like that much either.

Well said... I may have to borrow this "format" for my other blog.

"...why do you want to kill me and my family? How can you call yourself my friend and vote for people who want me dead for my faith, my orientation or a malfunction of my repro system?"

I asked a fellow congregant a similarly phrased question and got back a whole mess of mansplaining about fiscal concerns and the role of government. I understood what he was trying to say - that he agreed with the old bastions of the Republican party... I replied "call yourself something else then, but don't call yourself a Republican"...
