Sigh.

Why is it I'm writing TopOfHisGame!Nick, where he's calm, in control and getting wood from breaking people's arms, but the Nick-in-my-head insists on being broken and damaged?

I like Psycho!Nick through other people's eyes. This is when Liza makes her gambit for freedom. She's just poisoned James and Tanis and been intercepted as she flees.

James stirred and opened an eye. He looked at Steven. “Have the police been called yet?”

Nick shook his head. “Not yet, Sir.”

“Do it, boy. And stop threatening her, she knows her fate.”

Nick rose and went for the handheld, a dog responding to his master's orders. Steven held Liza in an immobile grip and watched his wife, worry on every line of his big face. Liza had hoped, once, he might look that way for her.

“You'll have pain for seven days,” she informed Ligatos. The doctor made notes as she kept on. “Which is the least I could do for a man who said he wanted a mathmetician, then pushed me for sex and nothing else.”

Steven rumbled behind her. “He never pushed you, girl. He never pushes.”

“You all did,” she snapped.

“We all serve him here as well as elsewhere. The quicker you go to him, the more easily we assimilate you to the team.”

“Tanis will live. She'll wish she hadn't for about two weeks.”

“I'll take good care of her,” Steven promised.

“Knew you were fake.” He had made her think he cared, at least a little. But he didn't. None of them did.

“Never, little girl. My first loyalty is to James. Then to my wife. You could have had third place.”

Liza shut up and scowled as Nick came back. He knelt beside the bed and held James' hand, rubbing his face against it Ligatos weakly ran his fingers into Nick's hair.

“Brilliant girl,” he whispered to Nick. “Such a shame now.”

Liza sniffed. “I'll be out of prison in a week, my mother dead, my sister looked after. Do you think I care what I've done here? I got what I wanted.”

The look Nick sent her poured ice water over her spine.

“Want me to make sure she stays in prison a little longer, Sir?” he asked James. “A few broken bones would slow her down.” Liza sighed in relief when James shook his head. Nick looked her over with that same cold, dead stare and then kissed James' hand. “Not even her fingers, Sir?” It sounded like he was begging for a chance.

“No, not unless it's necessary.”

Nick kissed him again. “It'd slow her chemistry experiments way down, and keep her from picking any locks.”

Liza watched James, hoping she would get out intact. He shook his head again. Then Tanis, still unconscious, let out a blood-curdling scream. James froze in his small motions.

“Do it. But clean breaks, please, Boy.”

Liza fought as Steven wrenched one hand from behind her back and held it out to Nick. The big man tightened his grip on her neck and forearm. Nick stood up, a grin on his face that looked like a shark's.

“Yes, Sir. I know my business.” His hands were light and cool as he took hold of her left pinky finger. He snapped it almost delicately, sending hot pain shooting through her hand. Her ring finger came next. He broke the middle one as she screamed and kicked at him to make him stop. Steven growled behind her and squeezed her neck until she shrieked and subsided.

Nick broke her thumb.

“Epsom salts!” Liza screamed the words. “Feed her epsom salts. It will stop the reaction.”

Nick broke her ulna and radius both on that arm with a sharp crack and the pain took her into blackness.

***

Nick stared at the limp girl and looked up at Steven. The big man brought her other hand out and he broke those fingers and her arm as well. Liza wasn't going anywhere for a while. Shame she was out cold. He settled back beside the bed and tried to ignore the hard-on that had started with the first break and now raged at him.

He watched the doctor dose Tanis and James with epsom salts. James sputtered after drinking the solution and looked queasy, but he did stop bloating and his color improved more rapidly.

He sounded stronger, too, when he spoke up. “Depending on how long she stays in prison, she will be useless now to us when she returns.” He looked around. The doctor was already setting Liza's hands and arms.

“Sorry, Sir,” Nick said. He wasn't at all. The bones breaking under his hands had felt good. He was ready to go find someone to beat to a pulp and then fuck through the floor. He tried to calm his breathing. Maybe Corban would be around tonight. He gave his attention back to James.
