Roll your own slash!
http://archive.salon.com/people/feature/2001/12/10/slash/

Frankly, I want the Harrison Ford/Spongebob pairing. Or Vlad the Impaler/Pilsbury Doughboy.

The Letterman/Leno segment is just disturbing. And if Brokaw/Jennings isn't a sign of the Apocalypse, I'm not sure what is.

The article itself is mocking slash, so be warned.

Yeah, it's the usual silliness from someone who doesn't know anything about the subject. It's so ignorant that it isn't even all that insulting -- by which I mean, it's hard to get too worked up about something this stupid. But I wonder why some people write mocking articles about things they don't know anything about? And do women's cultural interests and women's sexuality especially come in for that kind of mockery? Actually, very seriously, I'm starting to wonder -- is slash making some men very nervous, and that's why they have to write it off as a big joke? ("Don't worry, guys -- there's nothing important going on here, nothing you need to be concerned about; it's just some silly women getting off on pairing Elmer Fudd with Bugs Bunny!") If making fun of it doesn't make it go away, will they get nastier next? Or are these kinds of articles just cranked out by writers on a deadline suffering from writer's block, who just need something wild-n-zany to fill the space? I don't know, but I wonder what's motivating these people.

I suspect the last.

Slash and fans are like "Cute-kid-and-pet" story that can be used to fill a slow news day. It's something just racy enough to get a read, something everyone can feel superior to, and it lets the writer be witty (or think he is).

I also suspect some base-line nervousness, like when I told a room full of men that gay guys are better dates. They laughed then got hostile:

"Why would you date someone who isn't even sexually atttracted to you?"

"Gee, I dunno. They only dance well, know the best places to go and don't expect me to pay for the evening out on my back. Why on earth would I date someone who treats me like a fun human being instead of a whore?"

And for the record, I have seen Spongebob Squarepants slash.
I must go scrub my brain of the memory.
