Since I jumped in late, here's the earlier answers.

1. Tell us about your favorite writing project/universe that you've worked with and why.

My favorite is the dark future, with the DisUnited States. There is so much to play with, from the high-tech surveillance society that lurks under Heartland's bucolic, Music Man facade to the theocracy that runs the Confederated States, to the relative freedom of the United States.

It's fun at the lower levels, where Chuck and Seven live. But when you get up into the Ligatos Group and its levels, that when the real plots start.

2. How many characters do you have? Do you prefer males or females?

*hollow laugh* Let's just count the actual active ones and not the backstory ones, shall we?

50 female, 101 male And that's not counting all the shorts or the gender-queer characters

3. How do you come up with names, for characters (and for places if you're writing about fictional places)?

I start from the character's birth year. Then I check the list of baby names popular in that year. If I'm writing fantasy or SF, I take a less common name and alter it. Reuben became Ruvane for "For Love of Etarin."

Sometimes, I use a random generator:
1d4+2 for the number of letters
1d20 for consonants
1d6 for vowels.
Then I play with it.

4. Tell us about one of your first stories/characters!
One of my earliest (age 15) was a write-up of my ideal D&D game, an exploration of Keep Theda by an adventuring party. It was abysmal. But some trends were evident early in my work. And some of the characters did make it into other work here and there. Zara turns up with some frequency.
