How does one de-skeeve Persephone and Hades?

By ignoring the fact he's her uncle.
By letting him court her after he's carried her off to Hades.
By making the pomegranate her knowing choice.

I dunno, I think you have to strip out so much of this story that it's pretty much unredeemable. I assume you're also making the age difference disappear, because an adult man - even if he's not her uncle - courting a little girl is also skeevy. Then it's just captive-falls-in-love-with-captor, which is still skeevy (though a staple of '80s romance). It's the story of a child kidnapping, then and now, which is (mythologically) why the earth grows cold and still for half the year in mourning.

But hey, if you can, more power to you...

She's not a little girl, but a goddess of marriageable age (although young), so that's not so much a problem.

And yes, that's exactly how we presented it: here's why we have winter. Because Persephone was in love, ate some seeds and can spend part of every year with her husband instead of her mom.

I made her more active. And bride-abduction was commonplace up until the end of the 19th century.

I just couldn't face writing up another myth that was all about the boys and if there was a goddess anywhere, she was decorative.

This will give you a giggle

There's obligatory TV in the lobby across from my reception desk. Fortunately, the sound is turned off, and the last time that the signal cut off, I got them to tune it to the Weather Channel rather than Fox or CNN when they turned it back on. However, there's still some stupid-ass garbage on there from time to time.

I just saw a teaser for their upcoming EARTHQUAKE AWARENESS WEEK!!!!!!, which will probably be 20% science, 30% puff, 20% meaningless pictures and 30% alarmist nonsense. At any rate, the teaser's headline was "Is Memphis on Shaky Ground?"

My immediate thought was "Memphis? Which one?" Snerk.

Why do we need such a week? We KNOW what causes earthquakes.

Immodestly dressed women.

True...

I wonder what the standards for immodesty were in ancient Memphis were, though? Total nudity? Tomb paintings leave the impression that summertime wear was a tad...casual by our standards.
