To be honest, [livejournal.com profile] nbrooks and I worried about this one. A disabled Iraq vet, a double amputee and they're having sex? explicit sex? Sometimes with toys? And one's pagan? nobody will want that.

We figured it would be hard to place. Nuh-uhnh, the pub approached us. We figured it would be hard to sell. Nuh-unh. Peaked at number 8 on ARE's best seller list before it fell off. We figured the critics would hate it. They've loved it. Someone explain this biz to me in words of one syllable or less.

Anyway, Obsidian Bookshelf reviewed it today. Aside from some trouble with the blurb, Val really liked it.

"Shell Shocked is a subtle and remarkable story and is not to be missed!"

I like the phrase "A bold departure" as well.

Rainbow gave it 4.25 stars

Congratulations! It took buckets of nerve, and probably a lot of research to write a story like that, and it sounds like you did an excellent job. I'm glad it's getting great reviews! It's definitely on my TBR list, and I'm looking forward to it.

"Whut?"

Also, Shell Shocked is very awesome, as [livejournal.com profile] bittermint said, you should both be proud.

(And yes, I still intend to get a review up eventually.)

You wanting it was most of the reason we finished it in the first place. The whole time we were in the last half, I kept saying "Lanie wants it. We're guaranteed at least one sale."

They sound like regular folks to me. But I'm a Unitarian and a nurse.

See, you have perspective.

There are some who say you shouldn't write disabled characters if you're not disabled or work closely with disabled people.

There are some who think amputee sex is fetishistic or just gross.

We stepped VERY far out of the "hunky gay white straight acting atheist with money" norm for this one.
