DragonCon approaches apace. And I fear my costume is too mundane for the event.

I have my beat-to-crap boots. I have my jeans and denim vest and pocket watch. I have my battered hat. I even have a Colt .45. I need a band collared shirt. And I need to steam things up. Am currently taking suggestions for steampunk bits to add to Angelina Calamity. Am considering eyeglass loupes for the one good eye. I really want a single-eye goggle instead of a patch.

What would a free aeronaut have? A wrist-mounted compass sounds like an idea. Help?

Think Navigation:

Maps, Charts
a compass for plotting
Barometer (obviously something small an possibly belt mounted)
Astrolab
Clinometer round http://www.arabiannights.ca/nautical-gifts-decoration/images/clinometer.jpg or square: http://maurnavy.com/nautical/s067clinometer.jpg beats the f** outa me what it is...but it's navigational and looks like you could fake one kinda easy.
Binoculars or small telescope
an old style camera http://www.maurnavy.com/russian_cameras/sy003camera.jpg if your family has something like that hanging around in the attic

An army surplus canvas bread or medics bag (at actual surplus stores the used one run fairly cheap)

Possibly an old style canvas backpack (but could be a bitch to lug around a costume event) filled with newspaper and some scraps of white "silk" hanging out for a "parachute"

Our attic has bowling trophies. But a barometer is brilliant.

I don't want to schlep too much junk between the High Tea, the Thriller Dance and the Ranconteur competition.

Seriously, don't worry about being "too mundane." The nice thing about D*C is there's something for everyone, on all levels. The costume I received the most compliments on, bar none, was a one-piece black swimsuit, a tuxedo jacket, a top hat and heels. Sometimes the simplest things pack the best punch.

The D-Man Checks In: Seriously favor the succubus in the red dress, but for the steam-punk aeronaut:

~Leather flight helmet with goggles.
~Canvas bag/backpack/pouch for holding various supplies, snacks, and some-such.
~Scarf & gloves (it gets extremities-numbing cold up at high altitudes).
~Breathing apparatus (standard/modern medical cannula tubing is not hard to come by cheap) for high altitudes.
~Compass
~Knife
~Gun & holster... Or maybe 2-3 of them.
~Safety line & grapple.
~Utility belt and/or bandolier.
~Drinking flask (all but essential, for ummm... You know... Those high altitudes & keeping warm.)
~Spyglass and/or binoculars.
~Notebook & pen.
~Hand grenade and/or smoke bomb.
~Whistle (great for getting attention when you need it or wanna flag somebody down without needing to use gunpowder).
~Zippo cigarette lighter (or equivalent).
~Heavy-duty work clothes; pants & shirt.
~Boots.
~Leather jacket if possible, with wool lining & padding.
~Elbow & knee pads.
~Small utility lamp.

~Probably need a pocket watch too.
~Maybe a few old military service medals, as I should think most aeronauts likely got their initial training in some form of military service prior to going independent. If nothing else, they're good for bragging rights & maybe some free drinks at any pub that honors old military campaigners.

1) I have a pocket watch.

2) Angelina is a woman and never served militarily. She got her flight training on the job, so to speak.

Um...Labor Day in Atlanta. Also, indoors. Let's be logical here.

I have a hat. No flight helmet, too late period. Goggles... iffy.

Canvas rucksack is a good idea.

Hat, gloves, coat etc, NOT in Atlanta, thanks.

Dangly apparatus, bad idea considering what I'm DOING in this costume. (I'm wearing it to help break the World Record on the Thriller dance.)

Flask, compass, whistle, utility lamps, etc, good ideas.
