And some people say it's just the fringe
Mar. 1st, 2009 05:59 pmItem the first:
Colorado State Senator Scott Renfroe compares being gay to murder. And he quoted the Clobber Passage about making sure to execute gays.
After quoting Scripture to call homosexual behavior a “detestable act,” the Greeley Republican said it would be “an abomination according to Scripture” for the Legislature to “(take) sins and (make) them to be legally OK.”
Sub-item:
Renfroe doesn't even do the "I'm sorry you're offended" apology.
“I apologize if my use of words did upset people, I guess,” said Renfroe, a member of Eaton’s Evangelical Free Church. “I probably could have been more eloquent.”
Item the Second
Colorado State Senator Dave Schultheis votes no on prenatal HIV testing, saying that babies of promiscuous women SHOULD die of AIDS to make their mothers reconsider sex.
Quote:
“What I’m hoping is that, yes, that person may have AIDS, have it seriously as a baby and when they grow up, but the mother will begin to feel guilt as a result of that,” he said. “The family will see the negative consequences of that promiscuity and it may make a number of people over the coming years begin to realize that there are negative consequences and maybe they should adjust their behavior.”

from the Post article:
Today, Senate Majority Leader Brandon Shaffer, D-Longmont, said a number of Democrats have expressed outrage over the Republicans' comments.
"We can't tell people not to speak their mind at the microphone," Shaffer said. "They're expressing themselves, and they're representing their constituents as they think they best can." (emphasis mine)
This isn't the lunatic fringe. These are elected officials, representing their constituents!
Item the Third
The State of Virginia claims it can purge gay employees because sexual orientation isn't covered by the EEOC.
They aren't even TRYING to make a real reason. Just "you're gay, get the hell out."
Item the Fourth
Anyone who thinks Rush Limbaugh is NOT mainstream, who thinks he doesn't speak for the majority of conservatives needs to visit http://thinkprogress.org and watch the video of all the Republican leaders at the CPAC conference agreeing with him in their speeches.
Talk about your sore losers. We've won. We're going to succeed despite their obstructionism and they KNOW they're obsolete. But they're going to cause as much damage as they can before they're swept out the door.
