Many, many thanks to hlglne for giving it a read-through and flagging places that needed more exposition.

Whenever I send a story out to a publisher, I get this funny feeling like I've just run off the edge of a cliff, and am hanging there in mid-air, feet still churning, like Wiley E. Coyote.
