Cod, deep-fried in beer batter with malt vinegar

When, if ever, did you start liking olives?
Always. Black out of the can, green with tail-lights, they were all on holiday tables.

When, if ever, did you start liking beer?
When I tasted Harper.


When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish?
Always. Shrimp and crab, no lobster.


What was the best thing your mum/dad/guardian used to make?
Dad was a great cook, and Mom was pretty good. Narrowing it down, Mom could fry chicken like nobody's business (a skill i didn't inherit) and my dad smoked cornish game hens so beautifully I can still taste it 20 years later.

What's the native specialty of your home town?
Bad jokes. there is no speciality of Peculiar MO. OTOH, both Kansas City and Memphis are known for BBQ.

What's your comfort food?
stuffing. Just cheap stuffing out of a box. Or homemade noodles from grandma's recipe that requires "2 eggshells of water"

What's your favorite type of chocolate?
yes. I will eat most sorts, but nutella is running high at the moment

How do you like your steak?
Rare. Bleed, baby, bleed.

How do you like your burger?
grilled, on a toasted onion roll with bacon, cheddar and my special sauce (mayo, dijon mustard, BBQ)

How do you like your eggs?
Scrambled with cheese and mushrooms

How do you like your potatoes?
mashed with garlic and sour cream

How do you take your coffee?
I don't.

How do you take your tea?
Unsweetened.

What's your favourite mug?
a 3c. white mug with grapevines on the brim.

What's your biscuit or cookie of choice?
Archway molasses

What's your ideal breakfast?
Bacon, biscuit with sausage gravy (lots of pepper), cantaloupe, strawberries scrapple, tea and pineapple juice.

What's your ideal sandwich?
A good reuben: thin sliced corned beef, saurkraut, thousand Island dressing on rye bread that's been grilled until nicely hot.

What's your ideal pizza (topping and base)?
I like a thick crust, nice and chewy thats's been cooked in a very well oiled pan so it's kind of garlicky and toasty. The topping, oh man. Pepperoni, canadian bacon, mushrooms and lots of cheese. Alternately: alfredo sauce, grilled chicken, bacon bits and cheddar.

What's your ideal pie (sweet or savory)?
Prince of Wales pie: sweetened consensed milk, butter, brown sugar, pecans and chocolate. Lethal

What's your ideal salad?

Romaine and spinach, mushrooms, sunflower seeds, cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices and poppy seed dressing.

What food do you always like to have in the fridge?
milk, eggs, cheese

What food do you always like to have in the freezer?
hamburger, turkey, tator tots

What food do you always like to have in the cupboard?
tomatoes with chilis, cream of mushroom soup

What spices can you not live without?
pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg

BBQ!

Kansas City MO

Remington's. Prom night. Fabulous food, handsome date, dessert to die for. We had escargot, red deer with lingonberry sauce and the dessert bar.

Gates & Son BBQ. Dad and i split a platter of ribs.

Dixon Chili parlor. Dad and i put them out of business on "all you can eat shrimp and crab-legs night"

Washington Street Station: the spaghetti sauce was sour and not garlicky enough, but the salad bar and the dessert were wonderful, and the garlic bread alone was enough to make a meal. Defunct now.

What's your choice of tipple at the end of a long day?
Rum and coke
