Robert Johnson went to the crossroads
So the legend goes
He left with a guitar
And the Devil took his soul.

One version of the story has the meeting in a graveyard. Johnson and one of his teachers did practice at night in cemeteries (it was quiet and no one would bother them), which may be where the legend came from.
Robert Johnson (1911-1938) performing the last song he ever recorded.
He died under mysterious circumstances. Some say he was poisoned by a married man whose wife he was flirting with. Some say he died of syphilis. And some just think the Hellhounds got him in payment for his deal.
Eric Clapton covered it in a tribute session to Robert Johnson.
