Yarrr.
I be one sickly captain, so there be no revelries among the Sparrow crew on this, our personal holiday.
So, I be giving ye a taste of my next pirate novel: Privateer Plundered
This be work safe.
Adlai smoothed his best waistcoat and checked his reflection in the pier glass. He clutched the leather pouch and the signed papers like a lifeline. Collins' hand on his shoulder steadied him and he reached for the door handle.
"I love you," Collins whispered. "Go in there and be amazing."
Adlai swallowed and pushed open the door of the gambling parlor.
Young Pennyfeather sat at the whist table, a sour look on his pallid face as he tossed in his hand. "We didn't order food, boy," he snapped at Adlai and shuffled the deck of cards.
"Nigel Pennyfeather, I've come to collect on your debts."
The young man, surely no older than Adlai's own twenty four years, just laughed. It died in his throat at the hard looks on the faces of the other white men. Adlai knew he owed all of them money as well.
He turned to the card players. "I will buy any of his markers for honest cash, but at only half the face value." Collins stepped up and set a bag of silver on the table. Adlai opened it and showed them the coins. In ten minutes, he held another thousand pounds of Pennyfeather's debts.
"I am Adlai Goodman, son of Elijah Goodman, Master of Breakfront Plantation. I hold twenty-seven thousand, five hundred and thirty-two pounds of your debt, Master Pennyfeather. If you cannot pay in full, I will take the deed to Breakfront in lieu."
"Take it and be damned," Pennyfeather snarled, tossing it on the table. “The place is an albatross. I haven't had a minute's luck since I bought it.” Adlai handed over the sheaf of signed debt sales. Pennyfeather read them one by one and burnt them in the candleflames.
Adlai hid his elation. He bowed to the gentlemen and to Pennyfeather. “A pleasure doing business with you. May your luck improve now that it is gone.” Before anyone could take exception, he and Collins left, the moneybag much lighter, but Adlai's inheritance back in his hands.
