The drive from Home to Mom's was pretty uneventful. Except for the blinding rain around Ste. Genevive, where we pulled off to the side and let it hail all over us.
There was so much rain that some of the rock-cliffs near the highway had waterfalls, much to the kids' delight. intermittant malicious showers plagued the rest of the trip.
We got picture frames for Bunny's art in Columbia, and got to Mom's about 8. Not bad. Her new kittens are just darling.
550 miles with 4 kids is quite a trip.
On the plus-side: the Wal-Mart in Ste. Genevive makes splendid chicken strips. Subway in Columbia is pretty good too.

We Left Mom's at 8, after a nice bacon, egg and biscuit breakfast. Obi and Bunny had coffee. I held off on my caffiene until we hit I-35. It took 13.5 hours to make 750 miles.
The CD player on my boombox was hooped, but we got the car one to stop skipping, so we had Leslie Fish, David Bowie, and the Bangles. tuuuuuuunes!
We stopped in Iowa on I-80 at the World's Largest Truckstop. And there was free ice-cream at Kwik-Smart. (Mudd insists the Super America at Cheyenne, Wyoming is larger)
We piddled some, and did a breakneck 12 miles an hour for about 20 miles in Chicago.
jkb called because she was starting to worry. i reassured her we were only about an hour out, and we'd been caught in Chicago rush hour.
We got in about 10 PM, checked into the hotel, and I dropped my zines in the Reading room. We unloaded and went shopping at an enormous Meier. Bunny managed to turn her ankle being silly.
I was going "ack" about grocery prices, and promised to take
jkb to Aldi's (which I didn't) so she could see what i was used to paying. But $20 worth of groceries made it through the weekend nicely.
She introduced me to the delight known as a "Slow Screw": Orange juice and sloe gin. Lovely.
We crashed about 2, since we had stuff to do before the con started.

Friday, May 28: the Fun Begins
Jun. 1st, 2004 09:10 pmWe got up about 8 because Bunny wanted a swim. She swam, I did the treadmill and stationary bike until about 9. I kept an eye on her through the windows.
I found the hot tub i wished I'd known about Thursday night!
Anyway, around 10, we went up, ate, and got dressed. I just wore civvies and my boots and hat, but Bunny put on her Slytherin uniform. And very gorgeous she was too. Pictures when i get it developed.
I sorted out what we needed to do. We got in line about 11:45, since it had already snaked back to a distant exit door. i left her in line while I ran a couple errands. Bunny is a lovely child, very smart, but has no sense of direction whatsoever. She gets it from my grandmother. I OTOH have subscribed to the adage "Corellians can't get lost" since i was 12, and done my best to live up to it. She hadn't figured out the hotel enough to find her way back, so i went.
I bumped into
irene_heron (whom i had been introduced to the night before) and delivered her the promised CD of vids. Mine and Mudd's, about 24 total. He has 2 new ones up now.
( my con and welcome to it. )
