Leaving a publisher
Aug. 5th, 2013 10:07 pmI have made it official.
Naomi and I have asked for our rights back from Ellora's Cave.
We haven't sold 100 copies of anything in 2013, except for Ellora's Cavemen, which was marked down to 99c. (meaning we each got about 2c/copy)
The horrible part is we had a new book come out. Hot m/f paranormal romance, with a big sexy man in a leather kilt.
It sold 58 copies the first month.
This year, we've only broken double digits on 2 items.
Deeply disappointed in the performance of our last 2 books. It took 4 months for Spellbound Desire to break 100 copies.
Heart's Bounty sold 15 copies its first month.
FIFTEEN.
When I was a complete unknown, I put out a short with EC, m/m with BDSM. It had the same sales time. It sold 147 copies in that time span. Now I have a name. And I put out SF m/m romance, with BDSM. It sells 15.
They did a hatchet job in line edits (the thing BLEEDS italics) because House style.
And then they saddled it with this bullshit:
Inside Scoop: This highly charged male/male tale of two bounty hunters scorches across galaxies! There are scenes of m/f, f/f, threesomes and moresomes. There is also a very brief rape scene. Don’t worry, our heroes get their happy ending!
1) we're in ONE galaxy.
2) the m/f, f/f, threesomes and moresomes are wallpaper sex at an orgy. They do not involve our heroes. (okay, one threesome does) But there are lots of people having lots of sex around them. It's not a big focus of the book.
here's your het scene:
The posts to their left were taken by a woman strapped between them, a short red skirt folded up onto her hips as her Mistress paddled her, obviously just getting started. The bench across to them was occupied by a slim purple boy, strapped into a lovely arch and being ridden by a girl with long pink hair, both of them being stimulated by the electro-whip of their Master as he called out instructions. Miho quickly gave up trying to study the individual scenes as he felt a tug on his neck and hurried to catch up with Hevik’s quick stride toward the staircase.
3) It's a romance. The happy ending is a given.
This warning disrespects our readers, their knowledge of the genre.
It also puts the same-sex romance reviewers off the book.
I'm done. It's nothing personal, but they've made me crazy for the last time, and this time the return hasn't been worth it.
