I'm a firm believer that when someone shows and tells you who they are, BELIEVE them.

Don't write it off as just joking, just their sense of humor, just the drugs or "they don't really mean it."

Yet everyone I know DOES!

I see it all the time in politics ("Oh they're just saying that stuff, the important bits are this stuff.") I see it in personal relationships.

I see it in my own relationship. My husband is not a stupid man. And yet...

I informed my husband when we first got together that I was bad for him. I was untrustworthy, selfish and awful. And yet, after 26 years of knowing this and living with this, he still acts surprised when I do something awful. He acts like I've failed him. I tend to lose my temper at that. I told him upfront what he was getting into. I have proved it repeatedly. And he still acts shocked. He is not a stupid man. Why is he surprised when i do him evil and not good, all the days of his life?

As the snake said when he bit the man, "You knew what I was when you picked me up."

When someone shows you who they are, believe them.
