Let's talk TV
Nov. 21st, 2011 11:21 amSo I know I haven't posted anything fannish for a very long time.
Today, you get a twofer.
Nikita...ZOMG. It's wrong, wrong, bad and terrible of me that I went all extra lubricate-y when Division was capturing Birkhoff. I watched it twice. Plot? What plot? I'm here for the torture porn of my player base. The finger smashing... Guh! Been there, wrote that. But with him using the mallet.
The Walking Dead.
Oh please. Did none of these people read post-apoc fiction and mentally play "what if" games before the infestation? If that struck during a convention, the Literary Underworld would be in a better shape to deal with walkers than this ragtag band. And we're a bunch of overweight, middle-aged, suburbanites.
The hot water: why didn't they loot a sporting goods store, or hells a Wal-Mart, and get a solar shower bag? Why haven't they raided any Wal-Mart or Walgreens or anything they've come across? This is a small thing, but it takes me to the point of the rant
Why are they all such idiots? Why are they even on the road? I understand checking out the CDC, that's logical. But now where? Fort Benning? WHY? Why aren't they holing up in some remote farm house with its own wells, looting all the stores they can find, rounding up any livestock they can find and making preparation for winter. Maybe even getting a late garden put in?
Winter will freeze the zombies. They're dead. Their cells have no heat and they will freeze like corpsicles. Has no one thought this through?
Instead, our two high-authoritarian alpha males are seeking a higher (presumably male) authority to give them orders. They're centurions, able to command their own hundred, but still awaiting orders from Rome. And they will be like the ones forgotten at Hadrien's Wall in CE 500, who keep their post, still waiting for orders that will never come.
They're thinking short term. Somewhere, deep inside, they keep waiting for Proper Authorities to show up and make everything better. They don't expect to live like this forever. They need to start thinking long term.

Lori displayed half a brain and some long-term thinking this week, making a tough and right decision. Although that would not have been the most effective method. If they had the safe place, this would not be an issue. They could wait it out, she could be safe and well fed and there would be plenty of diapers and extra hands to care for the baby. But out on the road, with no real goal, no real plan, no. Better to send it back to Mother and wait for a better time and place.
Glenn, how do I love Glenn? He's smart, he's strong willed and I think I've loved him since he mouthed off to Rick at the first. I want him and Dale to take over, with Daryl and T-Dawg as their enforcers, and tell Rick and Shane to suck it up, that it's time for people with some skills to handle this group and not lead them blindly into more and more walkers.
Am I wrong for wanting a bit of a romance between Daryl and Carol Anne? They strike me as very similar, two lower-class folks in with all these middle class people who look down on them. And Daryl has gotten very protective of Carol Anne.
What part of "You can't cure dead" is Herschel missing?
Sigh, I'll keep watching for a while. It's a big old post-apoc soap opera.
