1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
Before my time. Mother wasn't even out of High School.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
Finishing 7th grade. Little sister got a vial of the ash. But that was clear out on the coast, and not our big problem. (Hubby remembers getting ashed up in Billings)
3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
Skipping school for a dr. appointment. I saw it live on a thrift-store TV while Mom was shoe shopping.
4. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
Rolla MO. Probably in class. I had been married just 2 months and was trying to finish my degree.
5. When the Berlin Wall fell (11/7/1989)
Rolla, MO. Can't remember much more. 3 years later I saw the sculpture up at Fulton.
6. When the Gulf War began (1/16/1991)
Still working on my degree. Living in Rolla and worrying that my hubby would get called up.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
Living in 994 at Lilies War. Totally incommunicado. I found out a week later.
8. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
Still in Rolla. 2 kids by this time, 1 a month old. I cried like a fool over the daycare thing, and kept hiding pictures of the fireman and the bloody baby from my 3 yo.
9. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
Dealing with a visit from my mother. We'd just moved to West Memphis earlier that month.
10. When Bush was first announced President (11/7/2000)
Probably on the computer ignoring the whole thing. I never watch election returns. I figured it made little or no difference which one got in. I voted. Nuff said.
11. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
Trying to close on a house.
12. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
At work. My coworker came in and said a plane had hit the WTC. We watched the second one hit live, and the collapse.
