When I was younger than Oli, I went to Girl Scout Camp. One of my bunkmates had three books with her. She loaned me A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Since then, I have visited Barsoom on a regular basis, although I have the plots memorized and half the dialogue, have constructed a jetan set and a martian clock. But somehow a John Carter movie, my dear dream since I was 10, has eluded me.
Now, it's coming!
SQUEEEE! There is not enough squee for the casting choices.
Willem Dafoe as Tars Takas! ZOMG that is going to be amazing. (FTR, Tars Tarkas is 15 feet tall, olive green, four armed and has tusks)
And for John Carter, Gentleman from Virginia, and the peerless Dejah Thoris:
Now, Taylor Kitsch's eyes aren't grey as they should be, but there are contact lenses. And Collins...perfect. They'll have to paint her red, but she is perfect. I was worried they'd stick some scrawny blonde in the role.
This isn't to say they aren't going to screw it up. I can already tell they're combining at least the first and third books. Matai Shang is in it, he's like this super high priest and doesn't show until the third book. And they cast Daud Shah as Shang. Matai Shang is a thern. White skinned, blond hair. Daud Shah is decidely not blond.
But ZOMG. I've wanted this for 30 years and more.
