We had fun tonight!

I showed the girls a variety of dancing clips, from the belly-dancer in From Russia with Love to "Make 'em Laugh" from Singing in the Rain to Slutney Spears' "Hit me Baby one more time."

We traced the development of movement, and they were amazed that the Bimbo uses some of the same moves that Cosmo uses in the comedic dance routine (athletic motion) and that the dancer uses with her hips.

Ya know, Britney looks too much like an anime character with those big eyes and the poofies in her hair...

They loved the chance to try out belly dancing, and we covered some basic steps for the hora, waltz, tango, lindy and hustle. We twisted to Chubby Checker.

I have the Star Wars Theme Disco Mix. It is appallingly 1978, and works great to the hustle. At least once I stop giggling.

We had a great time, they earned their dance badge, and I offered to run a "Yarn and Fabric Arts" badge workshop in March.

I also finished the edits on "Living the Code." I got a non-TPM beta, which is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending. It means people can come into my story with no background, but it also means that I wound up explaining that both the Unifying and Living Force are canon.

(TPM canon. Luke experiences no such dichotomy.)

I tossed out a rec for the "Rub it 'til it Breaks" challenge. All Frot, all the time.

Work has been arduous and shows no signs of slowing. I'm moving the Misc. to the AV room. Then I get to move all the cd-roms whose books didn't have envelopes. Then i can get back on the Journal cataloguing project.

Ah, two disasters down, 5 to go:
Must send Obi-Chris to school with 100 items for trail mix (will stop and buy peanuts)
Viking project must finish tomorrow
Bunny must also finish her book project for Thursday
Pinewood derby Friday
House must be clean before Sat AM

I have a KITCHEN! Yowza!

Reading your description of dancing to a disco version of the Star Wars theme made me laugh. One of the most fun parts of ConFusion was dancing on Saturday night, when they played things like the Weird Al Yankovic version of "American Pie." It was great: a disco-like atmosphere with umpteen people out on the dance floor, boogying their butts off, and it seemed as if almost all of them knew the lyrics and were belting them out -- "My, my, this here Anakin guy / May be Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry / He left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye / Saying soon I'm going to be a Jedi." It was a riot. Moments like that made me think, Wow, fandom really is fun. Way more fun than hanging out with normal people. *g*

The Wierd Al version is called "The Saga Begins."
The video is a hoot, and includes him in padawan clothes and 'do either singing at a piano played by a sith or in the cantina with an all-jedi backup band. (You can get it on-line)

I really love his song "La Vida Yoda" not to be confused with "Yoda." "La Vida Yoda" is to "La Vida Loca" and contains "His cane is gimer stick, and his skin's a founatian soda. He will wear you out. Livin' la vida Yoda." "Yoda" is to the Kinks' "Lola."

Both are great.

Fandom is a LOT of fun. And most fen know all the Weird Al songs, and much Monty Python.

Strange that my first comment posted as "anonymous." I probably forgot to check the right box or something. Anyway, yeah, fans are fun, and there's something about everybody knowing the same pop culture references and having fun with them -- don't know what it is, but it's neat. I went to hear this filk singer, Luke Ski, and he was hysterical. He had this one song that I suppose is kinda mean but very funny, to the tune of "The Piano Man," about Keanu Reeves and his acting ability or lack of it -- "Act in a film, you're the Keanu man! Act as if you can!" The audience sang along on the choruses, which started out, "Dude! Dude, Dude, Dude, Dude!" and suchlike. It was great. It's a lot of fun to sing silly songs about these well-known pop culture icons with a whole roomful of people. They don't have a lot of filking at MWC, either, and that's something else that I think would be great.
I keep getting ideas for filksongs but not writing them. Like this one that's rattling around in my brain -- The Mark Hamill Fan's Lament, about all the B-movies he's been in. The chorus would start out, "The movie's no good, but Mark Hamill was great..." because that's what almost all the reviews of his non-Star Wars movies say. One of these days I'm really going to write it.

What tune are you thinking for the Lament? I'm kinda getting an "Irish washerwoman" feel from the line.

I'd love to find a corner and set up a filk-sing. I'm evil. I have a 3 inch binder with everything from 15th century bawdy songs to The Moose Song.
