50 Book Update

5) Getting into Character; Seven secrets a novelist can learn from Actors. Brandilyn Collins.  Very good.  had a couple of revelations about various characters already.

4) Writers of the Future (1989) The winners of the annual short story contest judged by some of the biggest names in SF.

3) Turn the other Chick. Ester Friesner, ed. More humorous stories of women in armor. Harry Turtledove's "Of Mice and Chicks" is a scream.

2) The Pirate and the Puritan. Cheryl Howe.  Basic historical romance.

1) Neuromancer by William Gibson. Great grand-daddy of the whole cyberpunk genre.

The only thing I have ever read by Esther Friesner is "Love's Eldritch Ichor", which is the funniest Cthulhu story in the world. I keep meaning to seek out other things by her, but I somehow never remember.

Harlot's Ruse is very good. Funny, sexy, smart and spirited.

The Chicks in Chainmail line is--like most anthologies--uneven. They're all good, but some are bust a gut funny and others are sweetly ironic. (and some, like Lee Martindale's "Combat Shopping" are ten times funnier when the author reads them.)

Ms. Freisner is going to be at MidSouth Con in March. I look forward to seeing her again. She's a sweet lady and let me fangirl all over her for a couple minutes last time.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll see if I can remember to check Harlot's Ruse out.
