California

Heard the news, and I have one thing to say:

They've beat us before
And they'll kill us tomorrow
BUT WE'LL DRINK FROM THEIR HELMETS TONIGHT!

(they being the Christianist Right)

Bah! The California legislature is already all over that ruling, declaring the court cannot pass legislation from the bench; that is a civil matter to be decided by the voting public. I doubt very much that it will stand for long. Liberal as California is though, it could pass if anybody can make a ballot issue out of if. All they have really succeeded at doing in California is light fires under the seats of more conservative states in the union to quickly start amending their constitutions so that "marriage" is clearly and narrowly defined as they wish and will it to be.

Drink from their helmets tonight... but drink not too deeply, for their soldiers shall rally and be back in force to avenge their fallen tomorrow, and the fight shall go on... and the advantage of numbers remains on their side!

The legislature has TWICE passed this, and the Governor has vetoed it, declaring it a matter for the courts.

The two-step is over. Two out of three branches of the government have said aye and the third has said he won't stand in the way.

I've been too overwhelmed by my own small concerns to be following this lately. I'm very glad to have a knowledgeble person here to keep me up on it.

A moslem said to me once, "In Egypt we are holy. We do as Mohammad commanded. I don't understand why the United States is rich and we are poor."

I'll tell you why. Because God (in whatever form - or not - you concieve her) does not dictate to us what we should believe. The Universe favors Choice and diversity.
