Publishing: "Chain-male" comes out August 1 from Amber Quill. If you like slightly kinky contemporary, this is it. A library staffer in love with a night-school mechanic. And a visit to a historical re-enactment. Amazing what one can get up to in a tiny little Viking tent. Betas, there's still time to get your suggestions in before edits.

Church: suckered again. I volunteered for a cake. Now I'm bringing cake and cookies and a small table and a shawl and my tarot deck. Dessert and Divination this Friday at 6. It's a fund-raiser, $10 donation for dessert and a tarot reading/palm reading/rune reading.

Work was hot but freight was light. Returns will be HELL. This is that time of year.

~

Workout, 6 miles
You have biked 197 miles.
You have passed The western edge of the Midgewater Marshes.
It is 4 miles to the next landmark.
You have 261 miles to reach Rivendell.

The ground now became damp, and in places boggy and here and there they came upon pools, and wide stretches of reeds and rushes filled with the warbling of little hidden birds. They had to pick their way carefully to keep both dry-footed and on their proper course. At first they made fan-progress, but as they went on, their passage became slower and more dangerous. The marshes were bewildering and treacherous, and there was no permanent trail even for Rangers to find through their shifting quagmires. The flies began to torment them, and the air was full of clouds of tiny midges that crept up their sleeves and breeches and into their hair.

Reading: Almost done with The Jungle Book and about halfway into Filthy Shakespeare.

~

Scent of the Day: Crossroads A chill twilit garden of blooms over dry earth and mosses, heavily laden with incense and offertory herbs.

~

Card meditation of the day: Page of swords. Youth, new ideas, news and new perspectives.

~

Quandry of the Day: My Ellora editor wants more steampunk from me. Should I noodle on that or keep plugging and step up my word production for Julnawrimo? A whole new project could take my mind off the slow progress. Or it could all derail horribly. Page of swords: new ideas. Any ideas on good steampunk romance?

Zorya (Excolo): Spices of the Orient mingle with crystalline musk, midnight flowers and cereus, jasmine, primrose and vesper iris.

Vial: Jasmine!

Wet: musk

Drydown: Iris going rotten, jasmine going soapy, musk stabilizing what it can. Really dead. Like rotting stuff and compost. Spices starting to come through anbd musk, making it smell less like poop. Iris is starting to be nicer, like i remember iris smelling

Dry: Softens into a floral. Not bad, but losing its scent very quickly.

Dragon's Eye (Ars Draconis): A piercing, radiant perfume: dragon's blood resin, lily of the valley, lilac and galbanum.

Vial: red oil. LILAC!

Wet: Lilac and Lilly of the valley

Drydown: Lily of the valley coming through strong, lilac receding. Lily of the Valley! Strong throw. Love this. Dragon's blood comes out a little, making the flowers all spicy. Nice!

Dry: Lilac and Lilly of the valley with a spicy undertone. Gorgeous.

valarltd: (Default)

Fenris wolf (Diabolus): The raw, untamable power of chaos. Rosewood, amber, red musk and a dribble of red sandalwood.

Vial: red oil mmm, sandalwood!

Wet: a rose scent and sandalwood

Drydown: very woody, sandalwood and rosewood. Amber shows up a little later into it and musk. This is nicer than the black musk and amber of Haunted. Amber really coming out and sandalwood musk

Dry: Sandalwood! with musk. I love this.

Othello (Illyria): Arabian musk with two roses and a bevy of Middle Eastern and Indian spices.

Vial: musk and rose

Wet: musk with rose

Drydown: roses stronger under the musk. Very pretty. Musk, no spices coming in.

Dry: Strong musk with light rose. Not quite the tea roses. Very pretty.

valarltd: (Default)

Hairy Toad Lilly (Rappaccini's Garden) Spotty, hairy, purple, sweet!

Vial:seriously sweet lilies, very different than the others

Wet: Lily, purple and sweet. It smells purple. STRONG throw

Drydown: herbal scent, lillies underneath

Dry: Powdery lily. Not as nice as Black lily or Ulalume

Frumonious Bandersnatch: (Mad Tea Party) Bandersnatch musk, redolent of spicy carnations, wild plums and chrysanthemum.

Vial: floral with plums under

Wet: Spicy floral! Plums still there

Drydown: cinnamon mint with some fruity. Very fruity and spicy.

Dry: Spicy plum jam and carnations. I like this.

valarltd: (Default)

Blood Countess (Diabolus): Elizabeth Báthory, also called Erzsébet Báthory in Hungarian and Al┼żbeta Bátoriová-Nádašdy in Slovak, was the Bloody Lady of Hungary. In order to preserve her youth and loveliness, the brutal and incomparably savage countess captured, tortured and slaughtered innumerable young women and bathed in their blood as part of her beauty regimen. Ah, vanity. Corrupted black plum, smoky opium and crumbling dead roses covered by a deceptive veil of Hungarian lilac, white gardenia and wild berry.

Vial: sickly berry, like cough syrup and some lilac

Wet: eww, rotting opium with lilac

Drydown: Opium still there, under flowers. Plum and berry come in after a bit. Still perfumy opium, with lilac and berry under it.

Dry: artificial smelling berries with lilac and rose.

London (wanderlust): Venerable Victorian Tea Rose… twisted, blackened and emboldened with wickedness.

Vial: floral and syrup

Wet: Rose!

Drydown: Roses! More roses. No twisting and blackening here, just bold roses.

Dry: Sweet roses. Fades fast though.

valarltd: (Default)
Pride (Sin & Salvation): Vanity in extremis. The scent of rabid hauteur: Moroccan rose and narcissus.
Vial: rose!
Wet: rose and narcissus
Drydown: Strong rose & narcissus, almost air-freshener quality
Dry: mellowed roses and narcissus. Just what it says. Very lady-like.

Bordello (Ars Amatoria): A decadent, deep perfume, lusty and luxuriant. The scent evokes images of velvet-lined Old West cathouses, tightly laced corsets, rustling petticoats and coquettish snarls of pleasure. Bawdy plum with amaretto, burgundy wine and black currant.
Vial: Amaretto and wine
Wet:Amaretto, very almondy
Drydown: plum and wine, but still amaretto. Sweet, almost candy-like scent, black currant coming in now. Very berry-like with a boozy undertone.
Dry: Berries, berries, berries. The plum and black currant are overwhelming.
valarltd: (Default)
Bengal (Wanderlust): A sultry and unruly blend that emulates the ambient scent of the markets in ancient Bengal: skin musk with honey, peppers, clove, cinnamon bark and ginger
Vial: Spicy, definitely pepper, clove and ginger
Wet: mmm cinnamon clove
Drydown: slightly sweaty honey and cinnamon, sweet spices, not much throw. Warming up. The sweaty smell is going away. Still cinnamony.
Dry: Dry hot spices, no sultry here. Cinnamon, ginger and cloves, with sweet musk under it all. It's nice and tame--not unruly either--but not really a standout scent.

Ouija (Bewitching Brews): Lush parlor rooms draped in thick velvets and gilded in gold, unearthly whispering in the distance, fleeting flashes of wraithlike figures rushing just outside your vision, the chill of a phantom presence brushing by your cheek, the inscrutable knowledge that disembodied eyes are peering at you from darkened corners… this is the essence of Victorian-era spiritualism: rosewood, oak and teak notes with wispy blue lilac, tea rose, dried white rose and ethereal osmanthus
Vial: Floral, almost a wintergreen scent
Wet: Definite wintergreen
Drydown: wintergreen roses at first, then roses and coolly spicy wood. Woods coming through more. Very very rose, sweet dusty roses, not wet ones like Whip.
Dry: Elegant roses, polished wood halls, very victorian. I like it a lot. This is for wear with steampunk costuming.
valarltd: (Default)
Twilight (Ars Morendi) An enigmatic, otherworldly scent, brimming with power and mystery. Lavender and jasmine, with a touch of glowing honeysuckle.
Vial: lavender!
Wet: lavender and jasmine
Drydown: Ugh, powdery lavender and jasmine. I am not liking this at all. One of these three notes is not working for me. Something is going VERY soapy.
Dry: Soapy lavender

Havana (Wanderlust) Date palm, dried tobacco, snakeroot, and leather.
Vial: Mild tobacco smoke, something boozy and flowers. This is yummy, what I had hoped Santo Domingo would smell like
Wet: Flowers with a boozy undertone
Drydown: flowers. Tobacco makes it a little more complex, but doesn't take over. I like this. It reminds me of college for some reason.
Dry: Flowers with a nice underlay. Really pretty.

Hunger (Ars Amatoria): Evokes sheer, unadulterated carnal lust. An undeniably warm and sensual scent. Black narcissus, orange blossoms, and vanilla.
Vial: narcissus, but with a rotten smell
Wet: Definitely narcissus with some vanilla
Drydown: Vanilla and orange blossom coming out. Narcissus recedes. Definite vanilla, almost plasticky.
Dry: Very vanilla with flowers. Still plasticky. Yuck.

Black Pearl: (Bewitching Brews) Evocative of the sea's unplumbed mysteries. Gentle and lovely, but menacing and profound. Coconut, Florentine iris, hazelnut and opalescent white musk.
Vial: Powery perfumy, very sweet
Wet: flowers and a vanilla scent
Drydown: mmmm, very nice floral. Hazelnut isn't taking over. Mostly musk and iris.
Dry: Some coconut comes out, but mostly musk and iris. Lovely!
valarltd: (Default)
Uruk (Wanderlust): A city of mystery, wonder and majesty, said to have been built by order of Gilgamesh. Thick bitter almond and heady night-blooming jasmine with saffron, cinnamon leaf, red patchouli, river lilies, bergamot, fig leaf and the sacred incense of Inanna.
Vial: Almonds and cinnamon
Wet: Almonds, loud and clear with a watery note.
Drydown: flowers and spices have overpowered the almond. Must be the jasmine. Has an almost sharp edge, not quite soapy, to it.Something nasty underneath though, smells like compost. Going very soapy. I suspect the jasmine or bergamot
Dry: soap, like I've washed my hands after cleaning up a potty accident from kid or cat. Yuck yuck yuck.

Tzadikim Nistarim (Sin & Salvation): The scent is one of unadulterated spiritual purity, with a taste of the world's eternal pathos, and the joy of suffering with grace: frankincense, olive, spikenard, hyssop and galangal.
Vial: sweet, resiny and herbal, nothing I can identify
Wet: sweet herbs
Drydown: Sweet flowers and herbal. A vague incense note from the frankincense. A sweet smell, almost of lilies or iris.
Dry: Floral and lovely. I do like this one
valarltd: (Default)
Chimera: (Bewitching Brews) The fiery, volatile scent of cinnamon, thickened by myrrh, honeysuckle, and copal.

Vial: Cinnamon!

Wet: Sweet cinnamon and copal

Drydown: Hard copal with myrrh, very resiny. Sweetens and thickens but still resiny. Very resin and incense smelling. Honeysuckle and cinnamon vanish

Dry: Copal. It's nice but not something I'll wear often.

Incantation (Bewitching Brews) A profound and entrancing potion. Deep, wispy, and unfathomably dark: vetiver, dark woods, crumbling and burnt black sandalwood and a drop of lemon rind.

Vial: Sharp and dark, some pine scent

Wet: It smells like Irish spring soap with pine

Drydown: lemon-pine and weeds. Vetiver always goes weedy on me. Goes to a piney herbal scent with burnt undertones

Dry
: Still smells like Irish Spring. Blech.
valarltd: (Default)

Bow and Crown of Conquest
(sin & Salvation): And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
Nobility and haughtiness befitting the Antichrist: sage, carnation and cedar with lavender, vanilla, white musk and leather.

Vial: Cedar and sage, sweet and herbal

Wet: sage, cedar and vanilla and musk, the vanilla & musk keeps it from being too dry

Drydown: Cedar is very strong still. Some florals under it. Leather very much an undernote. It's gorgeous and masculine. Not much throw on my skin. Lavender comes through nicely later with the musky vanilla. Cedar and leather turning up. Very manly and sexy.

Dry: Leather base with cedar, musk and vanilla. This is what I had hoped Magus would smell like. I think this is my all-purpose male scent.
valarltd: (Default)
Mock Turtle's Lessons (Mad Tea Party) Not quite Turtle Soup: blurry aquatic notes, with a confusing, contrary splort of iris, ambrette, green apple, vodka, white mint and a squish of lime.

Vial: Floral with green apple

Wet: Apple, mint and other stuff, all mixed in. A heckuva throw!

Drydown
: Aquatics take over and some iris, but the apple is still there. When I was a kid, I had green apple perfume that always left me smelling like a cider press. This isn't that strong. Hint of lime in with the iris and apple. Aquatics still on top. Something a little sharper peeking through, maybe the mint or an aquatic note.

Dry: A clean sweet scent with some fruit undertones. Very nice and summery. Dressier than Shoggoth or Night Gaunt, though
valarltd: (Default)
Hanging Gardens (Wanderlust): This perfume is an interpretation of the Hanging Gardens by night, based on further accounts of its fruit and flora: date palm, ebony, fir, pomegranate, plum, two pears, quince, fig, and grapevine with plumeria, three gardenias and dry rose.

Vial: melange. No one dominant note. Sweet, floral, fruity,

Wet: flowers and fruit

Drydown: unidentifiable flowers, juicy fruity underlayer, awesome throw. Starting to get some rose and pear. Definitely a fruity scent, a little bit of underlying wood.

Dry: definite fruit with plum predominating.
valarltd: (Default)
Darkness (Ars Moriendi)
The waves were dead; the tides were in their grave,
The moon, their mistress, had expir'd before;
The winds were wither'd in the stagnant air,
And the clouds perish'd; Darkness had no need
Of aid from them -- She was the Universe.
Bottled gloom; the essence of oblivion. Blackest opium and narcissus deepened by myrrh.
Vial: thick dark honey with incense and perfume
Wet: Must be the opium I'm smelling. It's not myrrh or flowers. It's a resiny, thick scent, nasty.
Drydown: There's the narcissus. I like it. The opium is a nasty undertone, though. Narcissus really coming through though. The myrrh and opium are there under the flower, but the flower is beating them. Myrrh coming in a bit more. Very nice.
Dry: Very nice. Myrrh and Narcissus.
valarltd: (Default)
SHEOL (Ars Moriendi): The final burst of the soul’s light and joy before passing into the depths of the earth, and into the cords of Sheol; Sheol, who is never satisfied, and who makes wide her soul to all. Vibrant gladiola, graceful stargazer lily, triumphant iris and bright heliotrope flare, and is finally made somber by heavy copal, a drop of labdanum, and tonka.

Vial: Floral. Lily and others
Wet: Some other flower in the mix takes over. Lily is there, but others are as well.
Drydown: Something other than flowers is coming out from under. Some iris scent and lily, with the bottom note getting stronger. A spicy, woody scent, the copal and labdanum respectively I think, has taken over most of the flowers. Flowers are back, still don't know what, but it's a very white and springtime scent. Flare is a good word.
Dry: Dry flowers and wood. Very perfume-y, and nice. Good throw.
Later: Mostly wood and resin smell, like incense, but not as strong. Flowers are gone. It's a church-like scent and a serious one.
Summary: It does flare floral and then sober down into something of resins. It's serious and formal. It feels like a winter scent.
valarltd: (Default)
Gluttony: (Sin and Salvation) Thick, sugared and bloated with sweetness. Dark chocolate, vanilla, buttercream, and hops with pralines, hazelnut, toffee and caramel.
Vial: toffee and hazelnut, very sweet and thickening
Wet: very strong hazelnut. Different from Miskatonic U. with the toffee and caramel underlying it.
Drydown: still nutty—hazel and praline--and caramelly. No chocolate yet. Something kind of sharp coming in, might be the hops. Still very sweet and thick.
Dry: a more perfumy smell is coming in, although the sweet nuts still predominate. Vanilla and hops really take over at this stage. Lasts over 24 hours, gradually fading.
valarltd: (Default)
Debauchery (Ars Amatoria): From Love Potions A sinful, licentious scent: self-indulgent and luxurious. Mingled heady civet and red Egyptian musk, thickened with opium.

Vial: musky perfume, a cat tinge to it

Wet: Chemically and catlike, musk as well.

Drydown
: sweetening into a nicer musk. Something sharp underneath it still. I'm not sure I like this so well. Kind of incense-y and opium den smelling. Gets nicer from a few inches away. Up close, there's still a soapy sharpness.

Dry: Mmm, better. The sharpness has mellowed. It's a really rich and exotic smelling perfume. This is for days I need to dress up some.
valarltd: (Default)
Shub-niggurath (Picnic in Arkham): Iä! Shub-Niggurath! The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young, the All-Mother and wife of the Not-to-Be-Named-One. The lust incense of a corrupted Astarte. A blend of ritual herbs and dark resins, shot through with three gingers and aphrodisiacal spices.

Vial: Cinnamon and ginger
Wet: heavy ginger, some other spices, but I smell like a gingersnap, most definitely.
Drydown: ginger, spice and something resiny
Dry: more herbs and resin, but still gingery. This is very yum.
Later: dried herbs, resin and ginger. Doesn't last on my wrists but has hung on around my neck.
valarltd: (Default)
Velvet (bewitching Brews): Envelop yourself in the soft, sensual embrace of gentle sandalwood warmed by cocoa vanilla and a veil of deep myrrh.
Vial: mmm, chcoolate! A dry cocoa smell, not creamy milk chocolate.
Wet: Chocolate sandalwood?
Drydown: Sandalwood with chocolate and myrrh, yummy!
Dry: Myrrh with chocolate and sandalwood under. Very elegant. Dollface says I smell like play-doh with coconut in it. I question her taste.
valarltd: (Default)
Jolly Roger (Bewitching Brew) Sea spray with an undercurrent of leather, Bay Rum, and salty, dry woods.
Vial: Rum and wood very 80's aftershave.
Wet: ocean spray and wood
Drydown: Wood and rum and spray. Is giving me a headache, which intensifies every time I sniff
Dry: Sweetish, masculine and totally headache making. I like the smell but I can't wear it. Drat.
